Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, February 16)... The Rochester Americans' bid for 2,000 wins was derailed by the Manitoba Moose tonight, 6-3, at The Blue Cross Arena. With the loss, the Amerks (31-23-2-0, 64 points) lead over Manitoba and Abbotsford fell to just four points.

Marco Rosa led the way with two goals, while Nolan Baumgartner (1+1), Matt Pettinger (1+1) and Nick Boynton (0+2) each had two points. Cory Schneider made 32 saves to earn the win in goal for the Moose. Rochester got goals from Jeff Taffe, Shawn Matthias and Michael Duco. Goalie Alexander Salak was pulled with 3:09 to play in the second and was replaced by Tyler Plante.

The Amerks got off to a good start as center Chris Taylor celebrated his 1,200th professional game with a nifty assist on the game's first goal. With the assist, Taylor moved ahead of Amerks Hall of Famer Gerry Ehman for the third on the all-time assist list (284). The 18-year pro also sits just five goals from moving ahead of Ron Garwasiuk for 13th on the all-time goals lists.

Taffe opened the scoring at 11:39 of the opening period as he wristed a shot from the right side past Moose goalie Cory Schneider. Taylor and Wilson earned assists on Taffe's 18th of the season.

After Rosa scored the tying goal at 9:37 of the second, Rochester fought back and regained the lead at 11:44 on a goal by Shawn Matthias from Victor Oreskovich and John de Gray. It was de Gray's first point as an Amerk.

The Moose controlled the game for there, using a 4-0 run over the final two periods to break open the 2-1 game. Dan Sexton started the onslaught at 12:53. Baumgartner then tallied 48 seconds later to give the Moose their first lead of the night at 13:41. Rosa staked Manitoba to a 4-2 lead with his second of the night at 16:57, which chased Amerks starting goalie Alexander Salak.

It was more of the same in the third, as Pettinger notched the fifth Manitoba goal at 3:09 of the third for a 5-2 advantage. Duco cut the lead to 5-3 with a power-play goal at 14:10 with assists going to Jamie Johnson and Daniel Steiner. Manitoba's Michael Grabner connected at 16:01 for a 6-3 final.

The game was the first of a season-long five-game homestand and the first leg of a two-game set against the Moose. The contest was the third of four meetings between the North Division rivals this season.

The same two teams will meet again on Friday, February 19th to close out the season series between the North Division rivals. Faceoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena and will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. The game will also be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26. The Amerks will donate $2.00 to the Ronald McDonald Charity off of every full price ticket purchase on Friday night.
