Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose beat the Rochester Americans 6-3 at the Blue Cross Arena on Tuesday night to start their four-game road trip on a winning note. Marco Rosa scored a pair of goals while Dan Sexton, Nolan Baumgartner, Matt Pettinger, Michael Grabner rounded out the scoring. Goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 32 of 35 shots for his 23rd win this season.

The Moose were forced to play on the disadvantage when they were caught with too many men on the ice at 5:10. The Americans were able to bring their shot count to four on the opening powerplay, but couldn't get the puck past starting goaltender Cory Schneider.

Rochester went on the powerplay again, at 7:53, when Tom Galvin was called-out for interference. But like their first advantage, the hometown Americans couldn't connect and went zero-for-two on the PP.

Five-on-five hockey paid off for Rochester at 11:39. With a sleek pass from Chris Taylor, Jeff Taffe released a wrist shot into the low left corner of Schneider's net to open the scoring.

The powerplay tables turned in favor of Manitoba at 16:57 when Chris Taylor was penalized for hooking. The visitors failed to fire one attempt on netminder Alexander Salak during the short two-minutes and play returned to even-strength. After 20 minutes of play, Rochester held onto their one-goal lead and owned the shot clock 11-4.

The Moose and Americans exchanged powerplays in the early minutes of the second period but neither team could hit the back of the net on their respective advantages.

The Moose broke onto the scoreboard at 9:37. Salak stopped Travis Ramsey's initial attempt but the puck snuck out of the goaltender's grasp and sat loose on the ice. Marco Rosa beat the defenseman by diving across the net and pushing the bullet over the line to knot the game at one.

At 11:44 Rochester regained their lead. Shawn Matthias stormed into the Moose zone and beat Schneider under his left goal pad with a quick wrist shot from the top of the left circle for a 2-1 tally.

The Moose didn't waste any time, however, and collected their next goal less than a minute later. With an across the net pass courtesy of Lawrence Nycholat, Dan Sexton poked in his fourth goal of the season to get his club back on even ground.

For the first time of the night the Moose sat in the lead when Nolan Baumgartner, in his first game back in antlers after being re-assigned by Vancouver, took a blast from the slot to earn his second marker of the season at 13:41.

With Chris Taylor serving time for slashing, the Moose capitalized on their third powerplay of the game. With a backdoor pass by Nick Boynton, Marco Rosa threw the puck upstairs on Salack to put the Moose in a 4-2 lead with his second goal of the contest. After the goal, Rochester relieved Salak and put Tyler Plante between the pipes.

At 3:09 of the third period the Moose extended their lead even further. Matt Pettinger beat Plante over his blocker side when he picked the left corner to put his club in a 5-2 lead.

Michael Duco brought the home team closer at 14:10 when he slapped the disc into the back door for a 5-3 score in favor of the Moose.

Two minutes later, Michael Grabner doubled-up the Americans when he went top-shelf on Plante to extend his goal-streak to three games and confirm a 6-3 victory for the Moose.

LOOKING AHEAD The Moose will travel to Toronto for the first time this season to take on the Marlies.

NEXT GAME Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - 6:00 PM @ Ricoh Coliseum (6:00pm on CJOB Radio with Brian Munz)
