Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Rochester Americans ran their winning streak to seven straight on Saturday night, taking a 4-0 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
The win upped the Amerks' record to 22-15-3-3 on the season, good for 50 points and second place in the North Division. The Penguins (26-16-1-1, 56 points) dropped their second straight game on home ice, and fell into a tie for second place in the East Division with the Norfolk Admirals, who defeated the Syracuse Crunch, 3-2, earlier in the day.
Rochester opened the scoring 1:21 into the game as Luke Adam picked up a rebound off the pads of Eric Hartzell and tucked it behind the Pens' netminder for his 19th goal of the season.
The Americans doubled the lead six minutes later. Joel Armia stopped a clearing attempt at the blue line, then hit a streaking Frederick Roy in front of the net. The son of NHL Hall of Famer Patrick Roy redirected the feed past Hartzell, who was pulled from the game immediately after the score.
The score remained 2-0 until the 18:24 mark of the second period, when Johan Larsson pounced on a puck that took a big rebound off of Jeff Deslauriers' pads.
Armia finished off the night with his at 18:49 of the third. Roy assisted on the tally, completing the Gordie Howe hat trick thanks to a second period fight with Bobby Farnham.
The Penguins finished the night with a slight edge in the shot column, 26-22, but couldn't slip a shot behind Nathan Lieuwen, who recorded his second shutout of the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton returns to action next Friday night, February 7, when the Portland Pirates come to town. It's another Anything Goes Friday, featuring a $1,000 guaranteed giveaway from our friends at Cross Valley Federal Credit Union.
