Tri-City Americans News Release
EVERETT, WA - Needing to make a statement after a sub-par performance at home the night before, Tri-City came up big in a place they haven't previously had a whole lot of success.
Johnny Lazo netted two goals and Mitch Fadden had a three-point night as the visiting Tri-City Americans (39-16-0-3, 81 pts) took out the Everett Silvertips (24-26-7-2, 57 pts) 4-1 in front of 6,019 fans at Comcast Arena. With the win, the Americans take a 6-1-0-1 lead in the 10-game season series with the 'Tips, while picking up just their eighth win in 28 trips to the Everett arena. Tri-City also maintains their four-point lead in the U.S. Division over the Spokane Chiefs, who throttled the Edmonton Oil Kings 11-2 in Spokane. Meanwhile, Everett has now lost seven of their last 10 and their last three against the Americans.
The game got off to a rough start for Chet Pickard and the Americans, as the Silvertips struck quickly into the contest...sort of.
Just 1:39 into the game, Ryan White dumped the puck into the Tri-City zone as he was preparing to leave the ice on a line change. But, his shot took a strange bounce that went off Pickard's pads and trickled across the goal line, giving Everett the early lead.
However, it proved to be the only blemish on Pickard's night, as he went on to collect 35 saves in route to his 100th WHL victory.
Meanwhile, just over 10 minutes later, Lazo collected his first of the night, tying the game at 1. Then, only 11 seconds later, Lazo did it again, this time from the left circle, beating Kent Simpson near post. Fadden, who picked-up the lone assist on both of Lazo's goals, also collected his 300th career point in the process.
In the second period, the Americans went to work on Simpson, unleashing 27 shots on the rookie netminder. The 27 shots also set a new Silvertips record for most shots allowed in a period. Despite the lofty shot total, Simpson held strong until the final five minutes of the second.
At the 15:03 mark of the period, and on the power play, Taylor Procyshen buried a shot from the slot, over Simpson's glove, putting Tri-City on top 3-1. The goal also gave Procyshen 200 points for his WHL career, all with the Americans.
Late into the third period, and still trailing by two, Everett pulled Simpson for the extra attacker. But, with 1:00 remaining in regulation, Fadden capped off the scoring with his 26th goal of the season.
After topping the 80-point mark for the third straight season, the Americans will go for their fifth 40-win season this Tuesday, February 17th against the Prince George Cougars. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Toyota Center. Earlier this season, Tri-City picked-up a pair of 5-2 victories over the Cougars in Prince George, giving them four straight wins over the Cougars. The Americans have won their last eight home games against Prince George and have not lost since a 4-1 set-back on November 2, 2003. Tickets are available through all Ticketmaster outlets, including all Fred Meyer locations, the Toyota Center box office, or online at ticketmaster.com. Those unable to make it to the game, can catch all the action live on NewsTalk 870 AM, starting with the Sterling Savings Bank Warm-up Show at 6:45 p.m.
