T-Birds Tame Bruins

Kent, February 15, 2009 - The Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Chilliwack Bruins 3-1 Sunday night at ShoWare Center.

With the win the T-Birds move into sixth place in the Western Conference playoff standings, a point ahead of the Everett Silvertips. They are now one point behind the Kamloops Blazes for fifth place two games in hand.

Seattle (27-28-1-3) outshot Chilliwack 7-3 in the first period. Chilliwack (14-40-2-4) took a 1-0 lead at 14:16 of the second period on a goal by Scott MacDonald. Brandon Manning and Andy Smith had the assists.

The Bruins outshot the T-Birds 12-9 in the third period.

The T-Birds tied the game at 1:08 of the third period on a five-on-three power-play goal by Prab Rai. Jeremy Boyer took a face off in the right circle of the Bruins zone and won it forward towards the goal line. Rai came off the wall, corralled the puck and skated towards the Chilliwack net. Rai cut into the slot and beat Bruins goalie Mark Friesen with a quick snap shot.

Seattle took a 2-1 lead at 7:13 of the second on a goal by Devon LeBlanc. Chris Cloud muscled the puck away from a defender in the Bruins zone along the right boards. He carried the puck forward and then centered the puck to LeBlanc coming down the slot. Friesen was moving right to left and LeBlanc backhanded the puck and caught Friesen going the wrong way. The puck crossed the line at the right post.

Greg Scott added an unassisted empty net goal at 18:53 of the third period to seal the win for the T-Birds.

Both teams had 10 shots on goal in the third period and the T-Birds finished with a 26-25 advantage in total shots.

Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard stopped 24 of 25 shots to get the win and improve his record to 16-12-1-3.

Friesen made 23 saves on 25 shots and his record falls to 7-22-1-3.

The T-Birds next play on Wednesday, February 18, in Spokane against the Chiefs. They take on the Chiefs at home on Friday, February 20, at 7:35 p.m. at ShoWare Center.
