Allen Americans News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi - The Allen Americans overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Mississippi RiverKings in a strange game full of penalties, fights and controversy. The win advanced Allen's record to 29-10-3 (61 points).
Mississippi lit the lamp early in the first when Ryan Held scored off a rebound at 2:38. Britt Dougherty fired up the Americans immediately following the goal with a beating of RiverKing Adam Smyth. With about five minutes left in the opening frame, Brandon Straub had a goal waived off, and the Americans found themselves at a 5-on-3 disadvantage. Mississippi's Glenn Detulleo netted a power play tally on a deflected shot to bring the score to 2-0 at 16:56. Despite giving up two goals, Americans goalie Chris Whitley made big saves to keep the club in the game.
In a penalty-filled second, the Americans killed off a 5-on-3 and got two on the scoreboard. Both goals came from forward Nino Musitelli, and the second was on the power play. Brandon Straub, who took the game by storm, battled David Simoes to earn a few minutes in the sin bin for fighting.
More penalties waited the teams in the third, and Ryan Fairbarn emerged with his fifth game-winning goal of the season at 8:14 to give Allen their first and only lead of the game. Tyler Wooddisse took on Darrell Stoddard at 11:56 of the last period to round out the night of fights, giving fans one in each period.
The Americans went one for seven on the power play, while Mississippi was one for eight. Whitley made 32 saves in the game.
Prior to the game, defenseman Erik Adams was activated from injured reserve, and Chris Kaufman was placed on 14-day IR.
