Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The American Hockey League announced today the schedule format for the 2004-05 season. The Rochester Americans will return for their 49th season in the AHL and will again be a member of the Western Conference's North Division. Rochester also maintains the longest affiliation in professional hockey, as it enters its 26th season as the AHL partner of the Buffalo Sabres.
The Amerks enter the 2004-05 season after a banner year that saw the team finish third in the division (37-28-10-5, 89 points) and advance to the Western Conference Finals. Rochester lost in five games to the eventual champion Milwaukee Admirals.
This season, the Rochester Americans' unbalanced 80-game schedule features 66 games against Western Conference opponents and 14 games against teams from the Eastern Conference. The Amerks will play 56 games against divisional opponents, including 12 games against the Syracuse Crunch, and 10 games against Toronto and the defending North Division champion Hamilton Bulldogs. Rochester also battles Cleveland, Manitoba and St. John's eight times during the season.
In addition, Rochester will play 10 games against the Western Conference's West Division, which has produced the last three Calder Cup winners. The West Division slate includes two games against the 2004 Calder Cup champion Milwaukee Admirals and a pair of games against the 2003 champion Houston Aeros.
In the Eastern Conference, the Amerks face East Division teams 14 times. The contests are sprinkled among three teams from the division. The Amerks play geographical rivals Binghamton eight times and Albany four times. Rochester also meets its oldest rival twice this season, as it takes on the Hershey Bears. The Amerks (beginning 49th season) and the Bears (starting 67th season) are the two oldest active teams in the AHL.
The regular season will begin on Wed., Oct. 13th, and conclude on Sun., April 17th. The dates and times of regular season games will be released at a later date.
