Amarillo's Hahn Named CHL's Sher-Wood Most Valuable Player
March 24, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League has announced that Amarillo center Derek Hahn has been selected as the League's 2005-2006 Sher-Wood Most Valuable Player. Hahn was selected on 30 of 50
ballots submitted by CHL Coaches, Communications staffers and selected media members in each
market, handily leading voting ahead of five other finalists. The CHL Most Valuable Player award
is "Presented annually to the CHL player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team."
Hahn began the year in MVP form and rarely let up throughout the season. In the Gorillas' first
game of the year he recorded a season high six points, scoring twice on the power play and once
shorthanded in a come from behind 8-7 home win over Laredo. Hahn leads the CHL with both 110
points and 75 assists, and was a member of the starting line-up for the Southern Conference at
the 2006 CHL All-Star Game, making his third straight All-Star appearance. One more point in the
Gorillas final three games would give him sole possession of the all-time Amarillo single season
scoring record he currently shares with Chris Brooks, who played for the Amarillo Rattlers and was
named MVP following the Western Professional Hockey League's inaugural 1996-1997 campaign.
The honor is the second major award received by Hahn, who was named 2002-2003 CHL Rookie of
the Year after scoring 25 goals and 27 assists for the Gorillas in his first professional season. The
Elmira, Ontario native was named Sher-Wood Player of the Month for December this season, scoring
11 goals and 21 assists in 13 games, and was named Oakley Player of the Week in both weeks 10
and 12. Earlier this year he was a prominent award winner in the annual âBest of the Best' poll,
selected as the CHL's Best Overall Player, Best Stick-Handler, Best Play-Maker and Smartest Player.
Also appearing as finalists for the MVP award were runner-up Jeff Christian of the Youngstown
SteelHounds, along with Bossier-Shreveport's Dan Wildfong, Colorado's Greg Pankewicz, Odessa's
Sebastien Thinel and Wichita's Joe Blaznek. Awards already announced this week included Tulsa's
Jim Dahl as Rookie of the Year, Bossier-Shreveport's Ken Carroll as Most Outstanding Goaltender and
Laredo's Serge Dube as Most Outstanding Defenseman. Laredo's Terry Ruskowski was named CHL
Coach of the Year, Lubbock's Paul Fioroni repeated as CHL Man of the Year, and Laredo owner Glenn
Hart was the recipient of the Rick Kozuback award. The 2005-2006 CHL regular season concludes
this weekend, with the four (Bossier-Shreveport, Colorado, Oklahoma City and Wichita) Northern
Conference playoff participants set along with both Laredo and Odessa in the Southern Conference.
Amarillo, Austin and Rio Grande Valley remain in contention for the final two playoff berths to be
determined this weekend.
