Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Rio Rancho, New Mexico - The Amarillo Gorillas got their second road win of the season, beating the New Mexico Scorpions 5-4 in overtime on Thursday night. The win marked the first time this season the Gorillas have won back-to-back games, coming off a 7-4 victory in Texas last Saturday.

Amarillo would fight back from being down two goals twice in the contest, as they fell in a 2-0 hole in the first but goals from Nate Fornataro and Austin Sutter would tie the game 2-2 going into the second period.

Again in the second, New Mexico would take a two goal lead, as Craig Macdonald and Shawn Skiehar scored in the first eight minutes of the period to put the Scorpions up 4-2. Before the period would end however, another late Amarillo goal would cut the lead to 4-3, as Bill Vandermeer put a slap-shot from the top of the face-off circle past Scorpions goalie Mike Minard with just :29 left to play in the second. That score would carry over into the third.

Amarillo would waste little time in tying the game up, as Austin Sutter's second goal of the game 3:11 into the final frame tied the game 4-4, capping the Gorillas second two-goal comeback of the contest. Both teams would exchange chances in the third, but this game was destined for overtime, the third time these two teams have gone to overtime this year in just five meetings. Amarillo's rookie star David Nimmo would end the game 2:11 into overtime, with his 12th goal of the year, and first game winner as a professional.

Dan Bauer was in net for the Gorillas, and has now won three consecutive starts. He made 30 saves on 34 shots in the winning effort. Amarillo will head home for two more home games this weekend, taking on the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Friday night, and Odessa on Saturday night.
