Rayz Tapp Dance Past Sundogs 5-2
December 13, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
One week after suffering their worst loss on home ice in nearly 13 months, the Corpus Christi Rayz were looking for a statement game in a rematch with the Arizona Sundogs. On Thursday Night, from the American Bank Center, the Rayz statement was so loud, it was probably heard back in the Grand Canyon State. Jason Tapp stole the show making a CHL season-high 58 saves to lead the Rayz to a 5-2 win over the Sundogs. The Rayz win was their second straight and sixth game with points in their last seven. Corpus Christi improved to 7-12-2 on the year, and within three points of the idle Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees for second place in the division and fifth in the conference. The Rayz will cap their five-game homestand on Friday Night vs. the Laredo Bucks on Harley Davidson Men's Night, presented by Classic Rock 104.5FM. Tickets are on sale now. The Rayz and Sundogs opened the game with a wild first period. Arizona appeared to score in the opening half minute of the game, however referee Dan Dilworth disallowed the goal that rolled in off of Karl Sellan ruling that the net was knocked off its pegs immediately prior. Following that, Tapp was brilliant stopping an early barrage of shots by the Sundogs and keeping the game scoreless. The Rayz then took a 1-0 lead when Justin Quenneville threw a puck toward the net from the left boards while the Rayz were shorthanded at 9:04. The puck caromed off of Sundogs defenseman Daniel Laperriere and into the net for Quenneville's first of the night. The Rayz then made it 2-0 when Kevin Watters scored his fifth power play goal of the season at 15:12. Tapp continued his strong play all period and made a Rayz season high in saves for a period with 20. The Dogs outshot the Rayz 20-13.
The Rayz came out in the second with an early goal adding to their advantage. Quenneville notched his second of the night after a gorgeous drop pass from Brent Howarth 39 seconds into the frame. At 12:18, Grant Clafton made it 4-0 with his first pro goal on a rebound chance just outside the crease. That goal spelled the end for Andrew Gallant's night as he was pulled for Bill Zaniboni.
Tapp held the Sundogs at bay with 22 more saves in final frame. The Sundogs scored two late power play goals from Tyler Redenbach and David Schlemko to make it a contest, but Jon Jankus sealed the deal with an empty net goal at 19:40.
Tapp earned the win, making 58 saves on 60 shots and upped his record to 7-10-2. Gallant suffered the loss, and fell to 10-3, turning aside 14 of 18 shots. Zaniboni made seven saves on as many shots and did not figure into the decision. The Rayz went 1-6 on the power play and the Dogs were 2-10. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz 60-24.
The Rayz are proud to be celebrating a decade of hockey in South Texas. Individual game tickets are currently available.
