Alvarez Strong, Champions Beat Boulders
July 2, 2018 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Ottawa Champions News Release
OTTAWA - For the third day in a row, the Ottawa Champions got an outstanding performance from their starting pitcher. RHP Edilson Alvarez gave up a lone run, helping the Champions to an 8-3 win over the Rockland Boulders Monday evening.
This was Alvarez's first start for Ottawa after he was picked up in the Can-Am League's showcase team dispersal draft last week. The righty struck out eight over six innings.
Alvarez had a lead to work with wire-to-wire. Ottawa got off to a hot start in the first inning, with DH Sebastien Boucher singling home LF Coco Johnson. That was followed up by RF Steve Brown hitting his second home run in as many days, giving the Champions a 3-0 lead.
That was all Alvarez would need, but the Champions kept the offence coming, getting runs across on Rockland starter LHP Daniel Diaz in four of the five innings he pitched.
SS Daniel Bick had a two-run triple in the second inning and concluded the day 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Brown also drove in three runs, while Boucher scored two runs himself.
RHP Ryan Leach and RHP Andrew Cooper closed out the game for the Champions.
Ottawa will face Rockland twice more on Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4, before travelling to face the New Jersey Jackals. The Champions will return to RCGT Park for a three-game set with the Sussex County Miners on Monday, July 9.
