Alsup, Asheville Top Charleston for Series Split

CHARLESTON, SC - Ben Alsup fired seven shutout innings to earn the victory as the Asheville Tourists topped the Charleston RiverDogs 2-0 in South Atlantic League action on Friday night with a crowd of 5,082 in attendance at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The loss puts the RiverDogs at 52-37 (13-9 in the second half) so far this season. Asheville's victory gives them a split of the four game series and they now stand at 59-33 (12-10 in the second half).

Will Oliver (3-4) got the start for the RiverDogs and managed to escape some trouble in the early innings, but couldn't get through the fifth unscathed. Jared Simon (3-4, run) and Joey Wong started the frame with singles and then pulled off a perfectly executed double steal. Simon crossed the plate with the game's first run when he beat the throw to the plate on a fielder's choice and Wong scored when the next batter grounded out.

Alsup (10-4) was charged with holding the lead and he did an excellent job of doing so. In seven innings, he gave up only four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Charleston's best chance to score off him came in the first when Robert Refsnyder walked and stole second, but he was thrown out at the plate to end the inning by right fielder Jared Simon.

In the eighth, Will Rankin got the call from the bullpen and continued the strong pitching for the Tourists with a scoreless eighth inning. Jefri Hernandez picked up his 14th save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth.

BALLPARK FUN: Before the game, the youngsters that participated in the three day Charleston RiverDogs Baseball Camp were brought down onto the field, had their names announced to the crowd and got to shake hands with the entire RiverDogs team.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs will begin a four game series against the Greenville Drive on Saturday night as RHP Scottie Allen (3-5, 4.81 ERA) takes the mound against RHP Jason Garcia (4-4, 6.07 ERA). The game marks the beginning of Larry Doby Weekend and the RiverDogs will be unveiling a new Larry Doby US Postal Service stamp. The stamp will commemorate the life and the contributions that Doby made as the first African-American to play in the American League. The 1955 Cannon Street All-Stars will be at the park and the Lawrence Holt Memorial Scholarship will be presented during the game. The first 1,000 fans to the park will receive an original Negro League jersey and Lowcounty Local First will give fans who are tri-county residents $1 off their tickets on Go Local Saturday.
