Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal - The Alouettes announced on Wednesday the signing of University of Calgary Dinos non-import defensive tackle Josh Symons to a two-year deal with the club.
Symons (6'1", 290 lbs.), is the latest Dino to join the Alouettes following the signings of linebacker Mike Edem, running back Steven Lumbala and defensive end Michael Klassen earlier this week.
The Calgary, AB native started every game at nose tackle in his final year of CIS eligibility, recording 7.5 tackles for a loss and one sack while also helping the Dinos lead Canada West in run defence yielding only 105 yards per game.
"Josh had an outstanding season. He was the anchor of the Dinos' defensive line. We welcome his tireless work ethic," explained Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp.
In 2012, Symons recorded 33 tackles on his way to being named a Canada West all-star for the first time in his career. The tenacious and resourceful fifth-year Dino had a significant role within the defensive line's rotation last season, recording a season-high eight tackles against the University of Regina on October 19.
Having first joined the Dinos in 2007, he played an integral role in helping his team be crowned the five-time defending Canada West champions. In 2010, he started all eight conference games, including the Mitchell Bowl and the Vanier Cup.
