Almonte Drives Home Four as Thunder Sweep Altoona

(Trenton, NJ) - Zoilo Almonte drove home four runs in a 9-6 Trenton win on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep of the Altoona Curve at Waterfront Park. Trenton (67-44) finished the homestand at 7-1 and has won a season-high seven consecutive games. Dellin Betances (2-1) earned the win on the mound as Trenton pounded out 14 hits in the victory.

Almonte gave Trenton a 4-1 lead in the third inning with a two-run homer, his 14th of the season. Thunder starter Betances worked through five innings and allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Francisco Rondon, Ryan Flannery and Ryan Pope all pitched in relief to finish the game.

The Thunder extended their lead to 6-1 with two runs in the fourth off Altoona starting pitcher Brandon Cumpton and added two more in the fifth off reliever Mike Colla. Cumpton (10-9) managed just four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits in the loss.

In the sixth inning David Adams launched his fifth homerun of the year for a 9-3 Thunder edge. Luke Murton and Yadil Mujica had three hits apiece and Ibarra and Adams each had a pair in the 14-hit attack.

Trenton begins a three-game series in Bowie against the Baysox on Friday. LHP Vidal Nuno (6-2, 2.06) will try to continue the winning streak against Bowie's RHP Eddie Gamboa 4-3, 2.84). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
