Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - In his first start of the 2022 season, Kane County Cougars starter Ben Allison threw eight shutout innings and allowed just one hit, helping the Cougars to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Tuesday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.

Before allowing an Alec Olund double in the eighth inning, Allison (1-0) had worked through seven no-hit innings. The right-hander also retired the first 16 Railcats (1-3) hitters he faced before issuing a walk to Donivan Williams in the sixth. Allison finished his night with eight shutout innings, one hit allowed and six strikeouts against two walks.

For the first time this season, the Cougars (3-1) scored the first run of the ballgame. In the bottom of the first, Ernie De La Trinidad reached on an error and Sherman Johnson worked a walk from Gary starter John Sheaks (0-1). After Steve Lombardozzi grounded into a fielder's choice, Jimmy Kerrigan hit an infield single to score De La Trinidad and make it 1-0.

Kane County added another in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Josh Rolette doubled down the left field before Dylan Busby singled to put runners at the corners. After an Alexis Pantoja pop out, B.J. Lopez lined a single back through the middle to plate Rolette and stretch the Cougars lead to two runs.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars added a third run on an RBI single by Dylan Busby. Logan Nissen earned the save for Kane County with a perfect ninth inning.

The Cougars continue the series with the Railcats on Wednesday morning. Righty Adam Heidenfelder (0-0) will take the ball for Gary, while the Cougars will send right-hander Ryan Tapani (1-0) to the mound. First pitch from Northwestern Medicine Field is at 11:00 a.m. Gates will open at 10:00 a.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com/tickets.
