Denver Cutthroats News Release

DENVER - For the third time in as many meetings the Denver Cutthroats and Allen Americans went down to the wire on Saturday night at the Denver Coliseum, with the Americans holding on for a 3-2 win in front of 3,468 in attendance.

The season series between the two teams came to a close with Allen (17-5-1) winning two of three contests. The road team won every game in the series and each was decided by a one-goal finish. The Cutthroats (14-10-1) are now locked into a third place tie with rival Rapid City, and the two teams are scheduled to meet Tuesday in Denver.

The Americans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period as Darryl Bootland scored from the bottom of the left circle on a rebound goal at 7:16 and Anthony Maiani added a power play goal with 2:09 left to play.

In period two, Troy Schwab put the Fish on the board with a power play goal at 1:15 for his eighth of the season. Aaron MacKenzie and Brad Smyth tallied the assists making it a 12-game point streak now for Smyth, tying the league-high this season.

The Americans regained the two-goal cushion in the third as Jamie Schaafsma scored at 8:56. AJ Gale added a second power play goal for the Cutthroats to pull them within one with 7:10 to play from the right circle, but that is as close as Denver would come.

Kieran Millan took the loss despite stopping a career-high 49 shots. Aaron Dell earned the win for the Americans.

Allen finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Fish went 2-for-2.

The Cutthroats continue their holiday home stand on Tuesday when they host the Rapid City rush for the eighth meeting of the season between the two clubs. Puck drop is set for 7:05 PM MST.

Three Stars:

1. Aaron Dell (ALN)

2. Jamie Schaafsma (ALN)

3. Kieran Millan (DEN)
