All-Decade Reliever, MLB Vet Scott Rice Returns to Revs

(York, Pa.) - The York Revolution is pleased to announce the return of former Major Leaguer and 10th Anniversary Team relief pitcher Scott Rice to the ball club. The 18-year veteran will rejoin the Revs when they begin a three-game series in Sugar Land on Friday night.

Rice, 34, began the season pitching for the Triple-A Reno Aces (ARZ) of the Pacific Coast League. The left-hander signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks last December that included an invite to Major League Spring Training. Rice made nine appearances for the Aces to begin the 2016 campaign.

After prior stints with league rivals Long Island and Newark, Rice broke camp with the defending Atlantic League champion Revs in 2011. The Californian made 15 appearances for York that season, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA, one save, and 15 strikeouts in 14.2 innings. His stint at then-Sovereign Bank Stadium was short-lived, though, as the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Rice to a minor league contract on June 8, assigning him to Double-A Chattanooga of the Southern League.

In 2013, the then-31-year-old Rice became the season's eldest Major League rookie when he broke camp with the New York Mets. His Major League debut came on Opening Day when he pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out Nick Hundley and Cameron Maybin to cap the Mets' 11-2 win over San Diego at Citi Field.

Rice led New York in appearances that season, pitching in 73 games and going 4-5 with a 3.71 ERA. In 2014, he made 32 appearances for the Mets. His 105 Major League games are the most by any Revolution alumnus.

For his success during his first stint with the Revolution and beyond, Rice was named to the York Revolution 10th Anniversary Team before the 2016 season. He joined Stephen Penney, Ronnie Morales, Sean Stidfole, R.J. Rodriguez, Michael Nix, and Ian Thomas in the 25-man team's bullpen.

A former first-round pick by Baltimore, Rice made his pro debut as a 17-year-old in 1999. He spent eight seasons in the Orioles system, earning an Eastern League midseason All-Star nod with Bowie in 2005. Rice has also played in the Texas, San Diego, and Colorado organizations. His Major League debut with the Mets came in his 15th season of professional baseball.

Rice will join the Atlantic League-best Revs at the beginning of the team's six-game road trip between Sugar Land and Somerset, before returning to PeoplesBank Park to face Bridgeport on June 17.
