Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (18-30) split a single admission, seven inning doubleheader with the New Britain Bees (24-23) at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday evening, falling 7-1 in the opener and taking the nightcap 5-4. The Bluefish have now won four of their last six games overall and improve to 3-2 on their current seven game homestand.
In Game One, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Blake Beavan (1-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned runs) on ten hits, striking out two while throwing a wild pitch and surrendering a home run. New Britain Starting Pitcher Shawn Haviland (2-1) picked up the complete game win, allowing just one run on eight hits in seven innings of work, walking two while striking out one and giving up a home run.
New Britain took the early 1-0 lead of Beavan in the top half of the first inning when Greg Golson hustled down the line from third base to score on a wild pitch. The visitors would add an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jon Jones, plating Kevin Rivers to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bees. Jones was no finished there as he launched a two-run home run to left field off Beavan in the top of the sixth inning to put the capper on a rally that saw New Britain send eight men to the plate as they scored five runs on six hits to take a commanding 7-0 advantage. Haviland's only blemish in his attempt for a complete-game shutout came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Rossmel Perez blasted a solo home run to right field to make it 7-1 New Britain, the first roundtripper of the season for Perez, who has amassed 11 hits in his last 18 at bats. Perez and Endy Chavez led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of hits each. In Game Two, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher R.J. Hively picked up a no-decision, giving up two runs on four hits in four innings of work, walking one, striking out five and throwing a wild pitch. New Britain Starting Pitcher Craig Stem also did not factor in the game's final outcome, lasting four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (one earned run) on nine hits, striking out three and tossing a wild pitch. Eric Niesen (1-2) was victorious in relief for the Bluefish with two clean innings, striking out a pair. Sean Gleason (1-2) suffered the loss for New Britain out of the bullpen, surrendering one run on two hits in an inning and a third, walking and striking out one.
Bridgeport took a 3-0 lead on Stem in the home half of the first inning on a run-scoring double by Jose Cuevas and an RBI single by Luis Rodriguez, with Cuevas crossing the plate with the third run of the inning on a wild pitch thrown by Stem. The 'Fish took a 4-0 advantage again off Stem in the bottom of the third on an RBI base knock by Cuevas, driving home Welington Dotel who led off the frame with a double, extending his hitting streak to a team-best 12 consecutive games. Luis Hernandez doubled earlier in game two after picking up a single in game one to extend his on-base streak to a team-high 17 straight games. New Britain scratched across a pair of runs in the fourth against Hively to cut the deficit in half at 4-2 on an RBI double by Craig Maddox and a run-scoring triple off the bat of Jones. The Bees would knot the game up at four in the fifth on a throwing error by Cuevas and an RBI single by Jovan Rosa. Bridgeport would send the fans home with smiles on their faces as they answered back in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good at 5-4 off Gleason on a two-out single by Chavez that scored Connor David.
