Alexander Leads ICE to 3-0 Victory over Raiders
April 2, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
The Winnipeg ICE and the Prince Albert Raiders faced off today as both teams looked to get back into the win column. The ICE are coming off a hard fought 3-2 loss against the division leading Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday. The Raiders are back on the ice after a two day break, following a lopsided 7-1 loss at the hands of the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday night. Gage Alexander and Max Paddock would get the nod tonight for their respective teams, with Alexander playing back-to-back games for the ICE for the first time this season.
It looked as though the Raiders had opened the scoring as Ozzy Wiesblatt threw a puck on net that trickled through Alexander. The ref however, had blown the whistle before the puck had crossed the line, which video review confirmed as a no-goal. The period would end scoreless, as Prince Albert led the shot category by 10-6.
After Raider's forward Dallyn Peekeekoot got a game misconduct plus a five minute penalty for charging on Jakin Smallwood, the ICE went to work on the ensuing power play. Peyton Krebs ripped a shot from the top of the left face dot which was stopped by Paddock, but Cole Muir was right on the doorstep and batted the puck into the net with some impressive hand-eye coordination. Winnipeg would get a second on the prolonged power play as Connor McClennon laid a perfect slap-pass to Owen Pederson who redirected it top corner from his position at the far post. Shots were 21-12 in favour of the Raiders after two frames.
Winnipeg added to their lead early in the third as Skyler Bruce dished a perfect pass to Michael Milne on a 2-on-1 as the ICE forward buried in his first game back after off-season shoulder surgery. The Raiders would get a late power play with the net empty but Alexander would stop all 31 saves for his first career WHL shut-out.
It's a quick turnaround for the ICE as they face-off against the hometown Regina Pats tomorrow at 5:00pm CT.
