Albuquerque Wins Second-Straight As Sears Delivers Game-Winning Homer
April 6, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Todd Sears snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with a solo home run to left-center field, and the Isotopes bullpen took care of the rest as Albuquerque hung on to down the Omaha Royals 3-2 on a chilly Friday night at Isotopes Park.
After Omaha (0-2) took a 1-0 lead just three batters into the game, the âTopes (2-0) answered with single tallies in the second and fourth innings. Royals' left fielder Billy Butler tied the score with a run-scoring single in the fifth, but Sears would untie it one inning later. The âTopes first baseman crushed a Matt Wright offering over the wall in left-center, giving Albuquerque the 3-2 advantage.
From there, the âTopes bullpen was stellar for the second-straight night. After allowing just a run over four innings last night, the Isotopes bullpen went unblemished on Friday as three relievers combined to allow a hit and no runs with seven strikeouts to just one walk over the final 4.1 frames. In relief of âTopes starter Jeff Fulchino, right-hander Ben Julianel (1-0) came on in the fifth and earned the win. Julianel, making his Triple-A debut, allowed a hit with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Roy Corcoran earned a hold with two hitless innings, and Nate Field came on to toss a 1-2-3 ninth and record his first save of the year.
Wright (0-1) suffered the loss for the O-Royals in a relief effort. Replacing starter Zach Day in the second inning, Wright went on to allow two runs on five hits over 4.1 frames.
At the plate for the âTopes, Chad Hermansen continued to swing a hot bat. A night after finishing 3-for-3, Hermansen belted a solo home run in the 4th inning to left field. Reggie Abercrombie drove in the first Isotope run with a triple in the second inning, and shortstop Robert Andino collected two hits-including a triple.
Butler drove in both O-Royals runs on the evening. Omaha managed seven hits on the night, with Angel Berroa contributing the only two-hit effort for the Royals.
The âTopes and O-Royals will tangle again on Saturday night at The Lab. Righty Wes Obermueller gets the start for Albuquerque, while Omaha gives the nod to left-hander Tyler Lumsden. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. The first 3,000 fans through the turnstiles receive an Isotopes Schedule Magnet, courtesy of Comcast and Insure New Mexico Solutions. The game will be followed by the first fireworks show of 2007, presented by the Albuquerque Metropolitan Board of Realtors.
