Memphis Redbirds News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis shutout Oklahoma 4-0 Friday night at AutoZone Park to earn the Redbirds their first win of the season.
The âBirds were quick out of the gate once again, scoring three runs in the first inning for the second consecutive night. A pair of walks to Brendan Ryan and John Rodriguez led to a two-RBI triple for Tagg Bozied, who later scored on a Rick Ankiel single. Nick Stavinoha added his first Triple-A home run with a solo shot in the third inning to cap the scoring. Ryan led the way with two hits while seven different Redbirds registered hits on the night. Ramon Vazquez had two hits to lead Oklahoma.
Mike Smith was sharp in his Redbirds debut scattering four hits over six innings to earn the win. The right-hander fanned six and walked one on 91 pitches. The âBirds bullpen did not allow a hit in three solid innings with Mark Worrell, Dennis Dove and Andy Cavazos seeing their first action of the year. Doug Mathis was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings.
Memphis was winless through their first 10 games last season and did not shutout an opponent until their 64th game of the year when they shutout Oklahoma 4-0 on June 13.
The Redbirds will host Oklahoma tomorrow night in the third game of the four-game series. Memphis left-hander Chris Narveson is scheduled to face Oklahoma's Alfredo Simon. First pitch is slated for 6:10 p.m.
