Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Victor Diaz's two-out, ninth-inning double broke a 4-4 tie and capped a two-run rally as the Oklahoma RedHawks rallied to beat the Memphis Redbirds 5-4 in the season opener Thursday night at AutoZone Park in Memphis, Tenn.
The RedHawks benefitted from three ninth-inning walks (one intentional) and a wild pitch from Memphis closer Brian Falkenborg, who entered in the ninth with a 4-3 lead.
Diaz, who homered in the first, had two RBIs in the game. After Ramon Vazquez had tied the game in the ninth with a hard ground out up the middle, Diaz brought home Freddy Guzman with an opposite-field double to right for the eventual winning run.
Nate Gold, who finished second in the minor leagues with 34 home runs at Double-A Frisco last year, belted a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the game 3-3. Gold added a double in his Triple-A debut.
Reliever Willie Eyre tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win. Eyre departed in the ninth with one out and runners at first and second. Lefty A.J. Murray retired left-handed hitters Rick Ankiel and Travis Hanson to earn his first save since 2002, eventually stranding the tying and winning runs in scoring position.
Oklahoma out-hit Memphis 8-7, but went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Memphis' Mike Smith will face the RedHawks' Doug Mathis Friday in game two of the four-game series. Game time is 7:10 on Fox Sports Radio AM 1340 and the RedHawks Radio Network.
