Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The Albuquerque Isotopes (19-21) homered five times off the Fresno Grizzlies (19-22) to earn a 14-8 win in the series opener on Thursday night at Chukchansi Park in front of 6,977 fans.
Fresno infielder Adam Duvall, who entered tonight leading all of minor league baseball in RBI, connected for his eighth homer in 11 games in the ninth inning on a 1-0 pitch from left-hander Paco Rodriguez. The homer, combined with a RBI double in the fifth, gave him three RBI on the night to push his season total to 42 (41 games).
But Duvall's offense wasn't enough to claim a victory.
Fresno starter Mike Kickham allowed a career-high nine runs on 11 hits over 2.0 innings in his first start since coming off the disabled list (blister). Five of the nine runs and seven of the 11 hits came in a first inning punctuated by a two-run homer by Jamie Romak (10).
The Isotopes followed up in the second for four runs thanks to two-run homers by Joc Pederson (12) and Alex Guerrero (5). Both batters connected on homers again later in the game, as Alex Guerrero (6) took Brett Bochy deep in the fifth and Joc Pederson (13) poked a moon shot to center off Adam Reifer in the sixth. It was the third multihomer game for Pederson and his second in five games. The Dodgers' No. 1 Prospect, according to Baseball America, owns three of the Isotopes five multihomer games this season.
Juan Perez (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R) extended his hitting streak to six games by recording three hits and accounting for five of team's eight runs. The outfielder was activated for tonight's game after being optioned by San Francisco earlier in the week to make room for left-hander David Huff.
The Fresno pitching staff surrendered a season-high 14 runs on a season-high 19 hits, along with a season-high tying five homers. The 14 runs allowed were the most the Grizzlies have given up since June 24, 2013 at Tacoma (also 14).
The loss snapped Fresno's five-game winning streak (4/27-5/5) over Albuquerque.
Fresno sends right-hander Chris Heston (3-2, 3.40) to the mound tomorrow night, while he'll be opposed by Isotopes' righty Red Patterson (2-2, 5.12). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Chukchansi Park and will feature Postgame Fireworks (presented by Fresno Madera Farm Credit).
