Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
In a pitcher's duel between LHP Christian Friedrich and LHP Brian Flynn early on, it was the New Orleans (18-22) offense that came up big in the Zephyrs' 8-2 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (18-21) on Thursday night.
Through six innings, the only offense came from a fifth inning line-drive solo homer by CF Jake Marisnick off Friedrich that gave the Zephyrs the 1-0 lead. Then in the seventh and final inning for Friedrich, New Orleans smacked three consecutive hits off the southpaw to begin the inning, including a two-RBI triple to left by LF Brian Bogusevic. Three batters later, RHP Rob Scahill entered the game in a bases loaded situation but allowed three runs to score.
The Zephyrs would tack on two more via a homer from 2B Jordany Valdespin in the ninth inning.
The Sky Sox produced a couple runs in the seventh when LF Ryan Wheeler and 3B Drew Garcia both singled to lead off the inning. Three batters later, Rafael Ynoa pinched hit for Friedrich and smacked a ground ball to short but reached on a throwing error, causing both Wheeler and Garcia to come around to score.
The Sky Sox had a tough time getting into scoring position having only one runner get to third base and three to second base.
Friedrich (1-4) finished with six innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits, while fanning three and walking three.
Flynn (4-2) tossed six scoreless innings allowing just two hits, while fanning two batters and walking four.
Kyle Parker and R. Wheeler both collected two hits on the night. For Parker, he has now hit in 11 straight games, which is now the longest streak in the PCL after Round Rock's Kensuke Tanaka went 0-for-3.
The Sky Sox will take on New Orleans at 6:35 p.m. (MT) Friday. LHP Pedro Hernandez (2-0, 6.75 ERA) will face off against RHP Bryan Evans (4-1, 4.50 ERA).
