Alaska Aces News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Ryan Huddy and James Bates each had a goal and an assist as Stockton snapped Alaska's eight-game unbeaten streak with a 3-1 victory before 3,469 Wednesday at Stockton Arena.
Kevin Regan, a ninth-round NHL Draft pick of Boston in 2003 (#277 overall), made his Aces debut after winning back-to-back games for Providence (AHL) over the weekend. He stopped 30 of 33 shots, but caught a tough break early, as a simple rim off the glass caromed directly into the slot, where Cory Urquhart fired the loose puck into the net at 9:35 of the opening frame. Less than two minutes later, Huddy's goal came off a rebound and in the midst of a scrum in front of Regan, and the Thunder led 2-0 after the first period, having out-shot the Aces 14-5.
Alexander Imbeault put Alaska on the board by taking advantage of a bounce similar to the one resulting in Stockton's first goal, sliding a backhander past a lunging Andrew Perugini, who had stumbled trying to play a live hop off the boards. Imbeault's 14th goal of the year (tied for second on the team) came at 2:56 of the second period. The score remained 2-1 until a blast from the right circle by Bates barely a minute into the third period gave the Thunder a crucial insurance goal.
Head Coach Keith McCambridge pulled Regan for the final minute and a half of regulation, but unlike 10 days ago, when Alaska rallied from a three-goal deficit in the final six minutes, the Aces never came close to beating Perugini, who finished with 27 saves in claiming his sixth straight win, one that pushed Stockton (21-20-5) over .500 for the first time this season.
The Aces (27-15-3) tasted defeat in regulation for only the second time in 13 games but remained just five points behind West Divsion leader Victoria when the Salmon Kings fell, 4-2, at home to Las Vegas. Alaska returns to action Friday in Bakersfield at 6:00 p.m., travels to Ontario for a Saturday face-off at 6:00 p.m., and heads back to Stockton for a rematch Sunday at 3:00 p.m. All four games will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show getting underway 15 minutes prior to the opening puck drop.
