STOCKTON, Calif. - In a game otherwise dead even, a shorthanded goal by Cory Urquhart ultimately proved to be the difference in a 3-2 Stockton win over Alaska Sunday before 5,646 at Stockton Arena.

Both teams scored twice in five power play chances, and each managed just 21 shots on goal, with all of the scoring coming on special teams. The Thunder took a 2-0 lead on power play goals by Ryan Huddy and Mike Lalonde, but Lance Galbraith answered with one of his own at 18:50 of the frame, bringing the Aces within a goal at the break.

With a chance to tie the game midway through the second period, Alaska instead gave up only its fifth shortie of the entire season, as Lalonde fed a streaking Urquhart for a breakaway. Urquhart whipped a shot just inside the right post behind Aces starter Jean-Philippe Lamoureux at 13:34. Luke Erickson was whistled for a five-minute major and a game misconduct late in the period, leaving Alaska without two of its three leading scorers (Colin Hemingway missed his second straight game) for the final 20 minutes.

Stockton failed to convert the power play, and saw its lead whittled to 3-2 when Erik Fabian scored for the second straight night on a wraparound with the Aces on another power play. Two late penalties against Alaska effectively erased its chances of a comeback, as the Thunder had a five-on-three until 19 seconds remained in regulation. Despite all of the power play time in the third, Stockton mustered exactly one shot on goal, but the Aces managed just six.

Alaska (27-18-3) returns home having lost all four of its games on this seven-day trip. The Aces open a four-game series against Victoria with the West Division lead on the line Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. Alaska swept the Salmon Kings in a three-game set played in Anchorage last month. The series continues Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m., and concludes with a Sunday matinee at 5:05 p.m. Alll four contests will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750, with Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
