Akinjo Explodes for 35 Pts; Charge Overpowers Knicks

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Westchester Knicks, the official NBA G League affiliate of the New York Knicks, were defeated 115-103, to the Cleveland Charge Monday evening at Webster Bank Arena to open the regular season.

James Akinjo (affiliate) poured in 35 points (13-22 FG), his third game this season (including the Showcase Cup) scoring at least 30 points. He also finished with six rebounds, six assists, three steals and shot 6-12 from three. Garrison Brooks (affiliate) scored 20 points (8-15 FG) and 10 boards (tied game-high). DaQuan Jeffries (Two-Way Player) put up 17 points (7-12 FG), five rebounds and three steals (game-high).

For Cleveland (1-1), Sharife Cooper ended with 34 points and six assists. Jamorko Pickett had 24 points and nine rebounds. Rashad Vaughn contributed 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Charge held a lead as large as 33 points and were in the driver's seat for the game's entirety. The Knicks (0-1) did outscore the Charge 38-22 in the fourth quarter which was telling for just a 12-point separated final score. The Knicks' three-point shooting (24.4%) and free-throw performance (53.8%) were expressive of its inability to counter a true comeback. On the contrary, Cleveland shot 44.1-percent and 84.6-percent in those respective categories. The Charge credited 18 free-throw points to Westchester's 10.

The Knicks can avenge tonight's outcome tomorrow, January 3, against the Charge at 7 PM ET at Total Mortgage Arena.
