Texas AirHogs News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The AirHogs dropped their series finale to the St. Paul Saints Wednesday, 10-6. The Saints (13-9) scored 5 times in the 8th and 9th to overcome a late 6-5 deficit and halt a 4-game losing streak.
RHP Matt Shepherd got his 2nd start in an AirHogs uniform and struck out 10 batters over 6 innings, a season-high for Texas pitching. His offense built him a lead in the 3rd. Juan Sanchez picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and Burt Reynolds followed with a 2-run home run, his 9th of the season.
The Saints tagged Shepherd for 3 hits and 3 runs in the 6th to tie the game. They touched up Tyler Ihrig for 2 more in the top of the 7th to take a 5-3 advantage, their first lead since the top of the 1st inning of Game 1 Monday.
The AirHogs erased the deficit in the bottom of the 7th on a 2-run home run by Sanchez and an RBI single by Devon Rodriguez that scored Reynolds. The blast was Sanchez's 4th of the year and his 2nd in the series. The RBI was Rodriguez's 7th of the series.
The lead would not last long though. In the top of the 8th, C Maxx Garrett drew a walk against AirHog reliever Richard Suniga. He was pushed to 2nd when Alan Oaks, who relieved Suniga, walked RF Breland Almadova. 3B Nate Hanson singled off Oaks up the middle and, when the ball got by CF Michael Hur, all 3 were able to score. 1B Angelo Songco would then go deep for a solo homer. The Saints got another homer from CF Alonzo Harris in the 9th off David Russo to put the contest out of reach.
Despite the loss, the AirHogs (9-11) still earned a series win, their 2nd of the year, by defeating St. Paul in 2 of 3. The AirHogs will welcome the Wichita Wingnuts (9-11), managed by Pete Rose Jr., to Potter County Memorial Stadium tomorrow at 7:05 in the 1st of a 4-game set. RHP Cody Hebner is expected to start for the AirHogs.
A live radio broadcast of the game will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.Ticketing information for the entire week-long homestand in Amarillo is available at airhogsbaseball.com.
