WINGNUTS SWEEP T-BONES
The Wichita Wingnuts collected their first shutout of the season Wednesday as they completed a sweep of the Kansas City T-Bones with a 9-0 win at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Wichita's offense started out hot, putting together four straight extra-base hits with one out in the first. Christian Stringer started it out with a triple, and Zack Cox and T.J. Mittelstaedt followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to open the scoring before Dustin Geiger launched a two-run shot to make it 4-0. The Wingnuts added another later in the inning on an RBI from Brent Dean, and then tacked on three more in the third when Dean blasted a three-run shot for his first long ball of the year to give him a new career-high four RBIs. The eight-run lead was more than enough for Jon Link who shutout the T-Bones with six strikeouts in seven innings, retiring the last 12 he faced. Behind Link, Jesse Pratt stretched it out to 15 in a row retired by setting Kansas City down in order in the eighth, and Chad Nading struck out the side in his Wichita debut to finish off the Wingnuts first shutout since August 19 of last year.
LINK DOMINATES AGAIN
After taking the loss in his first two starts, veteran right-hander Jon Link has ripped off three straight quality starts for the Wingnuts, winning all three. After a complete game against Gary last time out, Link followed it up with seven scoreless frames yesterday against Kansas City. The righty allowed six hits over the first four innings, but then settled in to set the next 12 down in a row. Link struck out six on the day and did not allow a walk, and now owns a seven-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio this season with 21 strikeouts to three walks.
NEXT UP: TEXAS
After picking up their first series win of 2016, the Wingnuts will take their three-game winning streak to Amarillo to begin a four-game series with the Texas AirHogs. Both teams enter the set at 9-11, tied for second in the South Division behind Laredo. The Texas AirHogs are a merger between the Grand Prairie AirHogs and Amarillo Thunderheads for the 2016 season and are splitting their home games between those two cities. Wichita was 2-1 at Potter County Memorial Stadium last year.
