Wichita Wingnuts News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The Wichita Wingnuts scored seven in the fifth inning to cruise past the Texas AirHogs 10-3 in their rain-shortened series opener with the Texas AirHogs Thursday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium. With heavy rain starting to fall in the eighth inning, the game was called in the bottom of the ninth, but since the frame was not completed, the final reverted back to the an eight-inning contest.
Wichita (10-11) wasted little time in opening the scoring, plating the game's first run three batters in. Christian Stringer got the Wingnuts rolling with a lead-off triple, and one out later he scored on an RBI bounce out by Brent Clevlen to give the visitors the lead.
After Texas (9-12) evened the score with a run in the second, the Wingnuts went back in front with a pair in the third. Clevlen drove in his second of the day with a sacrifice fly, and T.J. Mittelstaedt followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1.
The AirHogs pulled within one in the fourth, before Wichita's huge fifth frame blew the game wide open. The first nine Wingnuts all reached in the inning, starting with two singles and an error. With the bases loaded, Wichita drew three consecutive walks, two of which were by the starter Cody Hebner (0-4), to make it 6-2. Richard Prigatano and Harrison Kain then each added two-run singles to cap the seven-run outburst.
The 10 runs of support were plenty for Alex Boshers (1-2). In his first start of the season, the righty allowed just one earned run in a career-high six innings, for his first career quality start. Boshers also added a career-high five strikeouts as he collected his first win as a starter.
Behind Boshers, Jesse Pratt and Chase Johnson each retired Texas in order in the seventh and eighth frames respectively, before the rain came and ended the contest after the eighth inning to send the Wingnuts to their fourth straight win and fifth consecutive road win.
The Wingnuts and AirHogs continue their four-game series Friday night at Potter County Memorial Stadium. Wichita will send veteran righty Tim Brown (1-1, 5.66) to the hill, while Texas will counter with southpaw Griffin Russell (1-1, 4.03). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
