SANFORD, Me. - It only takes one swing.

That's all it took for the Mainers to cap off Family Weekend in a nail-biting win over Danbury, 1-0. David Bermudez (Manhattan) was the hero for the second time this week as his single drove in the eventual game-winning run in the eighth.

It was a similar story to last Saturday as it was all Bryce Afthim (Southern Maine) from the jump, but joining him was Braden Quinn (UConn) for the Westerners.

Both starters went six innings and were very efficient through their frames, despite some troubles fielding for their defense, Sanford had two, and Danbury had three.

Quinn finished with nine punchouts and gave up four hits. Bryce closed the game allowing three hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Afthim has now tossed 19 consecutive scoreless innings.

Each side had chances to break the deadlock, but neither could break through until the eighth when the Mainers worked their magic.

Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) got the ball rolling as he was hit by a pitch. Then, he swiped second base and made it to third on a groundout from Grant Knipp (Campbell).

Bermudez stepped up and delivered, as Hewett scored on his bloop single to right field, 1-0.

That was all the Mainers needed with Brady Afthim (UConn) on the mound, posting three scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Brady has not allowed a run in any of his six appearances.

It was the second time this year that the Afthim brothers combined for a shutout, including last weekend's 10-0 win over Ocean State.

The Mainers continue to push to make the playoffs and sit at 13-15. While Danbury drops their fifth in a row and falls to 12-17 overall.

Sanford has the day off Monday before welcoming the Keene Swamp Bats to Goodall Park, Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) will be on the mound. The two foes have split the season series, with two wins each.
