Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Me. - Anything you can do, I can do better.
Sanford returned to Goodall Park looking to get back in the win column. A masterful pitching performance from Bryce (Southern Maine) and Brady Afthim (UConn) fueled the Mainers past Ocean State, 10-0.
The Moose found themselves with the early lead, unlike the last few games. In the bottom of the first, Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) scored on a passed ball, 1-0.
Bryce was in control from the first pitch and having a lead made his life easier.
His offense tacked on another run in the fifth as Polk scored on another passed ball, 2-0.
After six scoreless innings, Bryce would retire. In the last two games, he has thrown 13 consecutive shutout innings and has struck out 11, including four tonight.
Before Brady would take over, the Mainers would provide some extra insurance in the sixth.
First, an RBI single by Quinn McDaniel (Maine) brought in Kevin Skagerlind (UMass-Amherst). A couple of batters later, Aidan Kane would rope one down the right-field line scoring McDaniel and Polk. To cap off the explosive inning Jake Rainess (Maine) would drive in Grant Knipp (Campbell), 6-0.
Jump ahead to the seventh, the Mainers would push across a pair of runs. McDaniel notched a triple as the Ocean State outfielder lost the ball in the night sky scoring Jayson Kramer. Polk would waste no time allowing his second baseman to jog home on his RBI double, 8-0.
Another couple of runs in the eighth let the Mainers eclipse double-digit runs for the second time this season. A pitch with the bases loaded hit Skagerlind, then Kramer was also hit with a pitch, 10-0.
Brady would come in and shove for the final three innings notching six strikeouts.
With the win, Sanford gets to 10-12 on the year, just six wins away from matching last year's total, while the Waves drop to 9-14 overall.
Tomorrow the Mainers hit the road for a date with Keene before heading into the Fourth of July. Jacob Marshall (Rutgers) will be on the mound, with the first pitch coming at 6:30 p.m.
Sanford took both meetings the first time they faced the Swamp Bats over Father's Day weekend.
