The NECBL Daily Rundown - Vermont Wins Its 20th, Gulls Slip Past Waves

Vermont Mountaineers 8 - Upper Valley Nighthawks 2

W - Luke Carpenter 1-0 (Dartmouth): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

L - Jack Choate 2-1 (Assumption): 2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Maxfield Sports Complex in Hartford, VT - The Vermont Mountaineers (20-2) used three straight two-run innings to down the Upper Valley Nighthawks (11-9).

Vermont scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth inning to pull away from Upper Valley. After entering the fourth inning up 1-0, the Mountaineers scored on an RBI single by Stephen DiTomaso (George Washington) and a wild pitch. DiTomaso ended the night with two RBIs and two hits, joining Gerry Siracusa (Massachussetts Lowell) as the only other Mountaineer to have multiple hits.

Vermont added two more in the fifth through an Adam Retzbach (Lehigh) and a Tom Ruscitti (Fairleigh Dickinson) RBI. The Mountaineers extended their lead to 7-2 in the sixth through a hit by pitch and a walk.

Vermont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third off a Gerry Siracusa sacrifice fly. The Mountaineers and Nighthawks each scored two in the fourth. Upper Valley put up its only runs of the game through a hit by pitch and walk before Vermont extended its lead by four over the next two innings. The Mountaineers added their eighth run via a Stephen DiTomaso solo home run.

Vermont looks to win its twenty-first game when it hosts the Blue Sox (11-10) at 6:30 today while Upper Valley visits Winnipesaukee to face the Muskrats (9-10) at 6:00.

Mystic Schooners 8 - Bristol Blues 3

W - Reid Easterly 1-0 (Yale): 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

L - Brenden O'Donnell 1-1: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, Conn. - The Mystic Schooners took home an 8-3 win against the second-best team in the league, the Bristol Blues (14-6), and it was their second win within a day.

The Blues struck first with three runs in the second and fourth innings. Left fielder AJ Gaich (Yale) stole home once in each inning and a single hit by right fielder Griffin Arnone (Elon) brought center fielder Matt Smith (Bryant) home to get ahead, 3-0.

The Schooners responded immediately after in the fourth when designated hitter Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) ran home on a wild pitch and first baseman Charlie Pagliarini's (Fairfield) single resulted in first baseman Eddie Micheletti (George Washington) and second baseman Joseph Jaconski (North Carolina Chapel Hill) getting home to tie the game 3-3.

The game got quiet until the seventh inning where the Schooners punched in a five-run performance with another wild pitch and two singles by Jaconski and Pagliarini to put the game away, 8-3.

The Schooners will look to continue their momentum tomorrow when they hit the road to face the North Adams Steeplecats (4-16) at 6:30pm and the Blues attempt to get back on track when they host the Keene Swamp Bats (8-13) at 6:30pm.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 8 - Sanford Mainers 3

W - Patrick Harrington 1-0 (Northeastern): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

L - Jack Mullen 0-1 (Bowdoin): 5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER (3 R), 1 BB, 4 K

Robbie Mills Sports Complex in Laconia, NH - The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (9-10) beat the Sanford Mainers (9-12) off the back of a strong Patrick Harrington (Northeastern) outing.

Harrington mowed down the Mainers lineup over his six innings of work. The Winnipesaukee starter let only three Sanford runners reach base, giving up three hits. He struck out seven, walked none and gave up no runs, leaving the game with the Muskrats up 6-0.

Winnipesaukee scored two in the third to take the lead through back-to-back RBI doubles from Matthew Alifano (Adelphi) and Kohl Abrams (North Carolina Asheville). The Muskrats added another in the fifth to extend their lead to 3-0. A Michael Borrelli three-run bomb in the sixth made it 6-0 Winnipesaukee.

Sanford finally got on the board with a three-run seventh inning highlighted by a Grant Knipp (Campbell) two-run home run. The Muskrats scored the final two runs in the seventh and eighth to go up five.

Winnipesaukee hosts the Nighthawks (11-9) at 6:00 today while Sanford plays the Ocean State Waves (9-13) at home at 6:30.

Danbury Westerners 7 - Keene Swamp Bats 3

W - Ethan Bradford 1-1 (Nebraska Lincoln): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

L - Riley Skeen 2-2 (Florida Southwestern St): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER (5 R), 3 BB, 3 K

Alumni Field in Keene, NH - A five-run fifth inning propelled the Danbury Westerners (10-11) over the Keene Swamp Bats (8-13) on Friday night.

Entering the inning up 1-0, the Westerners exploded in the fifth. RBI singles by Hank Thomas (Ohio St) and Sam Mongelli (Sacred Heart), a sacrifice fly from Harrison Feinberg (Southern California) and a wild pitch platted five Danbury runners. The Westerners left the inning up 6-0, holding a commanding lead.

Danbury opened the scoring in the fourth inning through a Harrison Feinberg solo shot. Feinberg (2), Sam Mongelli (2) and Hank Thomas (3) all ended with multiple RBIs for the Westerners. The away team extended their lead to six after their five-run sixth inning.

The Swamp Bats hit back in the bottom of the sixth with three runs of their own. A Jackson Ross (Florida Atlantic) three-run bomb plated the only Keene runs of the night. Danbury added its seventh and final run in the top of the ninth. Hank Thomas and Sam Mongelli were the only two Westerners to have multi-hit games, while Dan Covino (Central Connecticut St) was the only player for the Swamp Bats to do the same.

Both teams play at 6:30 today, with Danbury hosting Newport (12-8) and Keene traveling to Bristol (14-6).

Newport Gulls 2 - Ocean State Waves 1

W - Jake Garland (Miami): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

L - Cameron Knox (Fordham): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

S - Logan Mcguire (Georgia Tech): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Cardines Field, Newport, R.I. - A two run inning was enough to give the Newport Gulls (12-8) the win over Ocean State Waves (9-13) in a one-run contest at Cardines Field on Friday night.

The offensive burst came in the bottom of the third inning when Colton Ledbetter hit a two-run home run to score Alec Makarewicz who had reached first on a single earlier in the inning, giving the Gulls a 2-0 advantage.

The Waves attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with three straight singles for Creek Robertson who put the ball in play to score a run. However, Garland was able to get out of the jam only allowing the one run setting up McGuire who entered in the top of the ninth and earned the save.

Both teams return to play on Saturday, July 2nd, at 6:30 p.m. with the Gulls traveling to take on the Danbury Westerners while the Waves hit the road to take on the Sanford Mainers.

North Shore Navigators 5 - Martha's Vineyard Sharks 2

W - Graham Jeffries (Salve Regina): 6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

L - Ronaldo Gallo (Miami): 4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

S - Nathaniel Espelin (Dayton): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K

Vineyard Baseball Park, Oak Bluffs, Mass. - The North Shore Navigators (5-16) scored early and often, overpowering the Martha's Vineyard Sharks (12-9) at Vineyard Baseball Park on Friday night.

The Navigators scored first in the top of the second off three consecutive singles by Jake McElroy (Holy Cross), Jarrett Ford (Dayton), and Stan DeMartinis III (Bryant) with two runs scoring as a result of an error by Martha's Vineyard shortstop. Jake Gustin (Bryant) hit an RBI single in the third inning while Jonathan Luders gave North Shore a 4-0 advantage with an RBI sac fly in the top of the fourth.

The Sharks got two runs back in the sixth inning off a two-run home run by Marcus Franco but were put away in the top of the eighth when the Navigators scored again off an RBI single by Jack Penney to increase their advantage and ensure the win.

The Sharks will get another chance as they rematch the Navigators at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, July 2nd, with North Shore having home-field advantage.

North Adams Steeplecats 8 - Valley Blue Sox 5

W - Nate Beal 1-1 (Penn) 2 IP 2 H 1 ER 2 BB 1 K

L - Kevin Haynes 0-3 (Sacramento State) 4 IP 7 H 4 ER (5 R) 4 BB 3 K

McKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, MA - The North Adams Steeplecats (5-16) snapped their five-game losing streak with a victory over the Valley Blue Sox (11-10).

The Steeplecats got going early by scoring two runs in the top of the first. The runs came on a wild pitch, and an error by the catcher on a dropped third strike. The North Adams offense continued with a solo home run by Ryan Galanie (Wofford) to make it 3-0.

Valley's answer came in the bottom of the third. After Chase Hanson (Hope International) led off the frame with a triple, Steve Luttazi (UMass Amherst) scored him on an RBI single.

North Adams doubled the lead in the fourth inning. Kyle Hannon (Penn State) knocked in two runners on a double to make it 5-1. The Blue Sox struck again in the bottom half of the inning on a Michael Casaleggio (Palm Beach Atlantic) double to make it 5-2. The score stayed this way until the seventh inning. The Steeplecats scored two in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Vincent Bianchina (Northwestern) and a single from Hunter Pasqualini (Central Connecticut State) The Blues scored in the bottom half of the inning on a single from Lucas DiLuca (Eastern Illinois). The score was 7-3 Steeplecats, and North Adams tacked on one more in the eighth on a wild pitch. Valley gave it one last effort, scoring on a two-run home run by Hanson, but it wasn't enough.

The Steeplecats will be returning home to face the Mystic Schooners Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Sox will head to Vermont to face the Mountaineers Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
