Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH - Akron's Steven Wright worked six strong innings in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday night, leading the Aeros to a 6-1 victory over the Bowie Baysox at Canal Park.
Wright's gem, along with the Aeros 3-2 victory in game one, completed a sweep of the twinbill, and pushed Akron's record to a season-high 65-42. The Aeros also opened up a 10-game lead over the second-place Baysox in the EL West, their largest margin of the season.
Wright (9-6) showcased his knuckleball early and often, keeping the Baysox (54-52) off balance at the plate. He allowed just five hits, and did not allow a run until giving up a solo homer to Rhyne Hughes in the sixth inning. Wright walked three and struck out four. He became Akron's first nine-game winner.
Ryan Rohlinger's two run single in the fourth inning proved to be the key hit in game two. It came off Bowie starter Eddie Gamboa (4-3) with two outs.
The Aeros broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. The rally included a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt by Jordan Henry to score Davis Stoneburner from third base to make it 6-1.
Wright left after walking one hitter in the seventh. Newcomer Jose Flores came on to record the final three outs in his Double-A debut.
Akron's Tyler Holt had three hits and an RBI in game two, and finished with four hits in the doubleheader.
In game one, the Aeros captured the completion of Friday night's suspended game, 3-2. Akron scored three times in the third inning off Jacob Petit (7-3), who returned to the mound after starting the game Friday night. Roberto Perez doubled and came home on an RBI single by Jordan Henry. After a pair of walks, Nick Weglarz stroked a two-run single to make it 3-0.
Righthander Toru Murata (2-1) won for the second straight outing. He pitched three innings, holding the Baysox to three hits. He left in the fifth after giving up back-to-back hits. Rob Bryson came in and retired consecutive hitters, although Bowie's Caleb Joseph registered a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
In the seventh and final inning, Aeros Closer Preston Guilmet gave up a two-out, RBI single to Joseph to cut the lead to 3-2, but got Jai Miller on a fly ball to right to end the game. It was save number 18 for Guilmet.
The Aeros and Baysox will conclude the series and homestand with a 1:05 PM game Sunday afternoon. LHP Rich Zagone (2-2, 3.32) will start for Bowie, while LHP Matt Packer (2-0, 1.35) will take the ball for Akron. It will be "Bat Day" at Canal Park, courtesy of MDS Bats. The first 1,000 youngsters 12 and under will receive a 26" wooden bat. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
