Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Portland Sea Dogs took the lead just two batters into the game and never looked back, defeating the Binghamton Mets 5-1 on Saturday night. The B-Mets stranded nine runners on base and watched their six-game home winning streak against the Sea Dogs come to an end.
After getting held to two runs in Friday's doubleheader, Portland's offense jumped out of the gate against B-Mets starter Greg Peavey in the opening frame, with the first four batters reaching safely.
Jackie Bradley led off with a walk and Jeremy Hazelbaker gave Portland the early lead by stroking a two-run homer to right center. Marquez Smith followed with a double and scored when Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled to left field.
Binghamton cracked the scoreboard against Portland starter Jeremy Kehrt in the third. Wilfredo Tovar started the frame by doubling down the left field line. The shortstop took third on a single by Juan Lagares and scored when Eric Campbell grounded out to third.
Peavey settled down after allowing an unearned run in the second. The righty retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced, ending his night after six innings. Portland scratched out their final run against him in the fifth. Hazelbaker reached on a bunt single to start the innings, stole second and third and scored on Smith's second sac fly of the night.
Kehrt navigated his way through five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. The righty's night ended after issuing a pair of two-out walks. Michael Olmsted entered and induced Wilfredo Tovar to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Peavey (4-7) exited after six innings, having allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits. He struck out four and gave way to Armando Rodriguez in the seventh. Rodriguez allowed two hits and struck out four over two shutout frames. Adam Kolarek made his Double-A debut in the ninth, striking out two in a perfect inning.
Olmsted took the game into the eighth inning, fanning five in two shutout innings of relief. Josh Fields got the final out in the eighth and tossed a perfect ninth to close out the game.
The B-Mets (50-56) complete their series against the Sea Dogs Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. LHP Mark Cohoon takes the hill for Binghamton against RHP Stolmy Pimentel. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
