CLEVELAND --- Cody Almond and Chad Rau provided the goals and netminder Matt Hackett stopped 22 shots Wednesday as the Houston Aeros won their fifth-straight on the road in a 2-1 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena.
The Aeros improved to 8-1-0-1 on the road and 12-3-2-4 overall and sit within a point of the West Division-leading Oklahoma City Barons. Houston has notched standings points in seven consecutive games (4-0-2-1) and owns the fewest regulation losses in the American Hockey League.
Houston took a 2-0 lead late into the third period. Almond scored his second goal of the season 7:42 into the middle period and Rau struck 59 seconds into the third.
Lake Erie's Greg Mauldin ruined Hackett's shutout bid at 14:45 of the third.
The Aeros continue a five-game road trip this Friday at Rochester in a 6:35 p.m. (CST) game against the Americans.
BOMB DROPPINGS The win tonight tied an Aeros franchise record for the team's best road start, originally set during the team's 1998-99 IHL Turner Cup championship season. The Aeros have 18 road points so far this season, the most through 10 away games since the team joined the AHL in the 2001-02 season...Chad Rau scored the game-winner for the second-straight game... The Aeros signed center Harrison Reed to a PTO prior to the game.
