The Carmoniacs...RHP Fausto Carmona looked good in his second rehab start, holding Erie to one run over five innings to earn the win in Akron's 7-2 triumph over the SeaWolves last night. Carmona did allow nine hits in his five frames of work, but eight of those hits were singles and only two runners reached scoring position in the first four innings. The infield defense also took advantage of Carmona's propensity to deliver ground balls, turning three double plays behind him (and one more behind Kevin Dixon in the seventh). Erie finally broke through for a run in the fifth on three consecutive two-out singles, but the Aeros already had a five-run cushion by that point. Carmona threw 66 of his scheduled 80 pitches in the game (47 for strikes), and then made his final 14 throws inside in the batting tunnel. Afterward he said he was ready to rejoin the Indians, but added that the final determination between joining Cleveland or making one more rehab start would be made today.
Back and Fourth...Akron led 1-0 after the first three innings last night, but cemented the advantage with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. 3B Wes Hodges reached on a fielding error by his counterpart Santo de Leon at the hot corner to open the inning, and two batters later C Wyatt Toregas destroyed a belt-high changeup from Erie starter Danny Christensen to make it 3-0. 1B Stephen Head then singled and DH Ryan Goleski drew a walk before SS Brandon Pinckney grounded a hit-and-run RBI single to left to plate Head. CF Trevor Crowe then capped the inning with a high chopper to short for a run-scoring fielder's choice that swelled the lead to 5-0 and sealed the game for all intents and purposes.
Still Streaking...The big blast from Toregas in the fourth inning last night also extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games. The native of Fairfax, VA is hitting .421 (16-38) over this streak, with six doubles, four homers, 16 RBI and seven runs scored. Additionally, he has walked five times and struck out just once on his last 11 contests (and hasn't punched out at all in his last 31 plate appearances). RF Bronson Sardinha ran his hitting streak to five games last night with a hustle double in the bottom of the eighth; the native of Kailua, HI is hitting .400 (8-20) with four runs scored over that stretch.
Magic Men...It's admittedly a bit early to start doing this, but with playoff tickets set to go on sale next week (more on that in the coming days) we in the Aeros Media Relations department can't wait any longer. Therefore, we are pleased to announce that Akron's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is...36 (the magic number increases to 39 with regard to clinching first place in the Southern Division). The magic number is of course deduced by the time-tested formula G + 1 - WA - LB where G=the number of games in the season, WA=the wins of one team and LB=the losses of the other club.
