BOWIE, Md. - The Aeros pounded out 11 hits, all of them singles, as they scored five runs and cruised to a rain-shortened 5-1 win over the Baysox. Aeros right-hander Fausto Carmona allowed one earned run on four hits in his first start with the team, holding the top six hitters in the Baysox lineup to a combined 1-for-18 on the night.

Akron jumped out for four runs in the second inning against Baysox starter Radhames Liz. Carlos Santana led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a ground out by Beau Mills. The Aeros followed with five straight singles and put together a four-run advantage for Carmona.

The Aeros right-hander worked 6.0 innings, allowing one run on a solo shot by catcher Guillermo Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth. The sinker-baller retired nine Baysox batters by way of the groundout and struck out five in his second minor league start since being demoted from the Indians rotation on June 6.

"He has a lot of movement," said first baseman Eric Crozier, who went 0-3 with two strikeouts. "He uses your aggressiveness against you and if you're overly aggressive he will sink the ball away but you have to be patient."

After the second inning, Liz settled down and pounded the strike zone, letting his defense do the work. After a single by Carlos Rivero to start the fourth inning, Dave Krynzel made a fantastic running catch in center field off the bat of John Drennan. The Baysox center fielder took his time and made an accurate throw to Crozier at first to double off Rivero and keep Akron off the board.

Akron would tally a single run in the fifth inning, putting runners on first and third before an RBI groundout by Mills extended the lead to 5-0. Liz finished his night after 6.0 innings of work, allowing five earned runs on 11 singles while walking one and striking out four.

"I didn't control my changeup as well as I did in my last outing," Liz said. "I need to use my slider a bit more and not throw my fastball as much."

Liz's battery mate finally got to Carmona in the bottom of the sixth, as Rodriguez took a 1-1 offering from the Aeros right-hander over the wall in left to put the Baysox on the board. The home run was Rodriguez's fourth of the season and the 75th of his 13-year career.

"He's a big leaguer so he's going to be around the zone," Rodriguez said. "I sat on a fastball and hit it well and fortunately it went out of the park."

James Hoey came on to work a perfect seventh inning for the Baysox. The right-hander struck out Nicholas Weglarz and Carlos Santana, both of whom will be playing for the World squad in the 2009 XM Satellite Radio Futures Game. They will be opposed by Baysox left-hander Brian Matusz, who will be playing for the United States squad.

After Hoey recorded the first out in the top of the eighth inning, torrential rains washed out the final two innings of play at Prince George's Stadium. With the loss the Baysox fall to 42-35 on the season, 9.5 games back of Akron in the Southern Division.

The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 6:05 p.m. RHPs John Mariotti (2-5, 2.78) and Fredy Deza (3-2, 2.95) take the mound for the Baysox, looking to put a dent in the first-place Aeros. The team will also host a fundraiser to benefit the family of Christopher Jones. They are offering $5 general admission seat tickets through several Crofton businesses with proceeds being donated to the family.

The Baysox return home to play Akron on June 30. The Baysox 17th season as the class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles is underway!
