Aeros Fall at Bowie
April 11, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Bowie, MD - When the Baltimore Orioles drafted righthander Kevin Gausman with the fourth overall pick last June, they were hoping to see performances exactly like the one he delivered on Thursday night against Akron.
Pitching before 4,673 fans on opening night at Prince George's Stadium, Gausman held the Aeros to one run on two hits over six innings, and picked up a 5-1 victory, his first at the Double-A level.
A second-year pro out of Louisiana State, Gausman (1-1) retired the first seven batters he faced before giving up a third-inning single to Alex Lavisky. When his infielders dropped to routine grounders for errors leading off the fourth, Gausman calmly retired the next three in a row to strand both runners on base. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.
The Baysox (4-4) touched up Akron starter T.J. House for five earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. House seemed to be cruising with two outs and nobody on base in the third, but gave up back-to-back singles. The next hitter, Ty Kelly, drilled a triple to right to make it 2-0.
Bowie's Aaron Baker slugged a solo homer in the fourth, his second of the year, to make it 3-0. Baker's home run also came after House had retired the first two batters.
The only Akron run off Gausman came in the fifth when Giovanny Urshela led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored when the throw from catcher Brian Ward went into left field. That made it 3-1, but Akron never drew closer.
House (0-1) gave up seven hits, walked two and fanned four. He gave way to the bullpen in the sixth. Righthanders Cole Cook (1 2/3 innings) and Shawn Armstrong (one inning) provided scoreless relief for the Aeros (2-5).
Thursday's game was the first of 21 regular-season meetings between the Aeros and Baysox. By the end of May, the teams will have played each other 15 times. Last season the Aeros were 13-11 against the Baysox.
The Aeros and Baysox will play game two of the series on Friday night at 7:05. RHP Eddie Gamboa (0-0, 0.00) will start for Bowie, while LHP Matt Packer (0-1, 4.00) will make his second start for Akron. Friday's game will be carried on Fox Sports 1350-AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
