
Rock Cats Lose Home Opener 9-3 vs Sea Dogs

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats had their three-game win streak snapped Thursday in their home opener against the Boston Red Sox Double-A affiliate, the Portland Seadogs, with a final score of 9-3 in front of 5,165 fans at New Britain Stadium. Red Sox prospect Kolbrin Vitek had a strong night at the plate with four hits, including a double, two RBI's and two runs scored. Reliever Daniel Bard, who has pitched in previous seasons for the Red Sox, appeared in the 7 th inning, giving up two hits and striking out one. Catcher Josmil Pinto smashed his team leading 4 th home run for the Rock Cats.
The evening started with an opening ceremony featuring first responders representing the Connecticut State Police, Fire and Police unions and various police, fire and EMS departments. Within that group were multiple representatives of the emergency services involved in the Sandy Hook tragedy.
In the bottom of the first, Pinto continued his hot streak with a two-run home run, the third roundtripper in his last five at-bats.
Portland answered back with three runs of their own in the top of the second. Vitek had an RBI double and Alberto Rosario added a two-run double of his own. The Rock Cats also committed three errors in the inning.
Naugatuck's own Pat Dean started the game for the Rock Cats and went 3 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits, allowing five runs, two earned, walking one and striking out two. Rock Cats relief pitching allowed four runs, including a Tony Thomas two-run homerun, over the next 5 1/3 innings, walking six and striking out seven.
Portland's starter Brandon Workman went six innings, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out seven. His only blemish was the Pinto homerun in the bottom of the first.
Tomorrow's pitching matchup will feature Twins top pitching prospect Alex Meyer, as the Rock Cats take on the Sea Dogs for the second of four games this series at a scheduled game time of 11:00 a.m.
