Britton shines in Portland's 5-2 win over Reading

(New Britain, Connecticut) - Brandon Workman tossed six strong innings and Kolbrin Vitek collected four hits as the Sea Dogs cruised to a 9-3 victory against the New Britain Rock Cats Thursday night in Connecticut.

Workman struck out 7 and walked only 1. He gave up two runs on three hits.

Vitek went 4-for-5 in Thursday's contest. Vitek's four hits tied his AA career high. He went 4-for-5 at Binghamton on 4/20/12. Vitek added two RBI's in Thursday's game.

New Britain starter Pat Dean gave up five runs (two earned) on seven hits over three and two thirds innings pitched. He struck out two batters and walked one.

New Britain got on the board early. Josmil Pinto hit a two run home run to left field to put the Rock Cats up 2-0 in the home half of the first.

Portland responded in the top of the second. Michael Almanzar began the inning reaching third on an error by New Britain first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez. Kolbrin Vitek drove in Almanzar with an RBI double. Ronald Bermudez singled bringing up Alberto Rosario. Rosario hit a ball to third that was mishandled by Rock Cats third baseman Jason Christian, bringing in two more Portland runs and putting the Sea Dogs in the lead 3-2.

The Sea Dogs added to their lead in the third inning. Kolbrin Vitek drove in Tony Thomas with an RBI single to put Portland ahead 4-2. Portland would tack on one more in the third as Michael Almanzar scored on a Ronald Bermudez sacrifice fly to left.

Peter Hissey and Heiker Meneses both earned RBI walks in the 5th inning to make it 7-2 Sea Dogs.

Daniel Bard came on in relief of Workman and pitched a scoreless 7th. He surrounded two hits and struck out one batter.

Tony Thomas hit a two run home run in the 8th inning to put Portland ahead 9-2. It was Thomas' first home run of the season.

Nathan Hanson had an RBI single off Pete Ruiz in the bottom of the 8th to plate New Britain's third run of the ballgame.

The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) continue their four-game series tomorrow morning at 11:05 AM. Right-hander Kyle Kaminska (0-1, 9.00) makes his second start for Portland.
