Aeros Drop Fifth Straight as Rally Falls Short

Akron RubberDucks News Release

Akron, OH- So far this homestand, Canal Park has been anything but "home sweet home" for the Akron Aeros.

On Wednesday night, the Bowie Baysox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and then held off the Aeros for a 7-5 triumph that sent Akron to its fifth straight loss, all within the friendly confines of Canal Park.

The Aeros (20-26) have lost all three games against the Baysox after dropping the final two games against Erie in the preceding series. Avoiding the sweep will be foremost on the Aeros' minds when the teams play the final game of the homestand Thursday morning at 10:35.

In fact, the Aeros have lost more games at home than any team in the Eastern League this season. Despite few if any statistical discrepancies between home and road performance, the Aeros are only 9-16 at home this year.

Adding insult to injury, first-place Erie won at home over Harrisburg, leaving the Aeros eight games behind the division leader.

The Baysox (22-21) jumped on Indians righthander Brett Myers with three runs in the first inning, highlighted by Caleb Joseph's two-run homer to left. That's nothing new for Joseph. The versatile Bowie catcher and outfielder has hit five home runs and driven in 12 run off Aeros pitchers this season. Joseph was 2-5 in the game. Myers walked two batters and also gave up an RBI single to Brandon Waring in the first to fall behind, 3-0.

Myers (0-1) was making his second rehab start for the Indians, tuning up a sore elbow that landed him on the DL on April 20th. Myers worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed just the two first-inning hits. He walked four- possibly the most troubling aspect of his outing- and struck out two. He threw 76 pitches, 41 for strikes.

In the Aeros fourth against Zach Clark (1-2), Cedric Hunter tripled and scored on a wild pitch, and Jesus Aguilar belted a homer to center field, his fifth of the year, to close the gap to 3-2. Aguilar leads the EL with 37 RBI.

Clark, who earlier this year made his big league debut in a relief appearance for the Orioles, earned his first EL win of the season by going five innings, and allowing just those two runs. He walked two and fanned four.

The Baysox held a 7-4 lead going to the bottom of the ninth. Against closer Tom Boleska, Akron scored a run on a double by Ronny Rodriguez and a pair of groundouts. Tyler Holt then doubled to right, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Boleska fanned Cedric Hunter to seal it for his first save.

Rodriguez had three hits for Akron. Quincy Latimore chipped in a pair of singles. The Aeros actually out-hit the Baysox, 12-9.

The Aeros and Baysox will wrap up the series and the homestand in a special "Education Day" matinee at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. LHP Jacob Pettitt (2-0, 3.86) will get the start for Bowie, while the Aeros will counter with RHP Will Roberts (2-2, 4.30). The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
