New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against visiting Binghampton on Wednesday night, but the lead was short lived as the Mets quickly strung together a 4-run, 4th-inning rally that gave them the lead which they would never surrender en route to a 8-3 win.

New Britain starter Alex Meyer pitched effectively into the 7th inning, allowing just 6 hits and 4 runs (2 earned) while fanning 7. The tough-luck loss dropped his overall record to 2-2.

The Rock Cats undoing was the 4th frame when Binghamton sent nine men to the plate and pieced together a rally that included a walk, an infield hit and a key fielding miscue to give the visitors a 4-2 lead. RBIs were collected that inning by Blake Forsythe (sac fly), followed by run scoring singles by Wilfredo Tovar and Josh Rodriguez.

New Britain's early lead was posted in the 2nd inning when Binghamton starter and winner, Erik Goeddel (4-2), sandwiched a walk between 2 hits before allowing a bases-loaded walk to Danny Rohlfing to force in the game's first run. A Danny Santana single brought home the 'Cats' second marker while only a strong throw from Binghamton left-fielder Cory Vaughn prevented a third Rock Cat from crossing the plate when he gunned down Reynaldo Rodriguez trying to score from second.

Binghamton scored again with two outs in the 7th when southpaw Jose Gonzalez, summoned from the bullpen to face left-handed swinging Allan Dykstra, allowed an RBI single extending the visitors' lead to 5-2.

The Rock Cats collected their third run in the bottom half of the 7th when, after Danny Rohlfing walked and then advanced to second on an infield out, came around on a James Beresford single up the middle.

In the top of the 8th, Gonzalez placed himself in jeopardy by hitting Darrell Ceciliano leading off the inning. A base-on-balls and two outs later, Gonzalez collided with batter Daniel Muno while trying to field his dribbler up the first base line. Muno was safe, Ceciliano scored, and Gonzalez was shaken up and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Bobby Lanigan who surrendered an RBI single to Josh Rodriguez - making the score 7-3 - before getting the frame's final out.

I n the top of the 9th Lanigan issued a bases-loaded walk to Richard Lucas to force in Binghamton's 8th and final run.

Goeddel went 5 2/3 innings and surrendered 5 hits in the victory. He was followed by John Church (1 1/3 innings; 1 run) and Jack Leathersich (2 full innings, 0 runs) who slammed the door on the Rock Cats.
