Milwaukee Admirals News Release
OVERALL...The Admirals enter this week's action with a 4-0-0-1 record, good for nine points and first place in the newly created Midwest Division. The Ads suffered their first loss of the season last weekend in a 2-1 shoot-out defeat to Abbotsford, but they have still accumulated at least a point in all five of their games. The Admirals encounter their first of nine three game in three night stretches this week. They travel to Chicago on Friday night at 7:30 to complete a four-game roadtrip before hosting Grand Rapids on Saturday night and Texas Sunday afternoon at the Bradley Center, their first home action since opening night.
LAST WEEK...Milwaukee picked up three of a possible four points last weekend in Abbotsford, losing in a shoot-out on Friday and then topping the Heat 3-1 on Saturday. Friday night the Ads trailed by a goal after the first period, but Ryan Thang's fourth goal of the season tied the game and enabled them to get to OT before they dropped the shoot-out 2-1. On Saturday, Michael Latta, Victor Bartley, and Taylor Beck all lit the lamp for the Admirals, while Atte Engren stopped 24 shots to pick up the win.
ROAD WARRIORS...Last Saturday night's win over Abbotsford extended the Admirals AHL record road point streak to 20 games. Over that span the Ads have accumulated a 13-0-4-3 record. Milwaukee hasn't lost in regulation on the road since January 13th of last season when they were shutout 3-0 by the Manitoba Moose. Friday's game against the Wolves is the end of a four-game road trip, their longest of the season until April.
WHAT WILL HE DO FOR AN ENCORE...Admirals netminder Atte Engren stood tall in his first start of the season last Saturday night, turning aside 24 of 25 shots to earn the victory. The Rauma, Finland native is in his first full-season in North America after playing the past four seasons in Europe. Engren did see action in four games for the Ads last season, posting a 2-2 record with a 2.43 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
A LATTA FUN...Michael Latta posted a goal and an assist last Saturday night against the Heat, marking the second multi-point night of the season for the rookie forward. He St. Clements, ON native scored the first goal of the season for Milwaukee, on a penalty shot opening night at Peoria, and his four points is currently tops among rookies on the Ads roster. Last season Latta finished second on the Guelph Storm with 89 points (34g-55a), trailing only fellow Admirals rookie Taylor Beck.
MAN IN THE MASK...Goaltender Jeremy Smith surrendered just one goal and turned aside a season-high 34 shots last Friday night against the Heat. In his first full season as the team's starter, Smith has turn aside 99 of 105 shots he has faced thus far, a .943 save percentage to go along with a 1.44 goals against average. The Dearborn, MI native finished last year with a 16-8-2 record, to go along with a .921 save percentage and 2.26 goals against average, which were both the fourth best totals in franchise history. During the playoffs he started every game and compiled a 7-6 mark and a .931 save percentage and 2.28 GAA.
IT'S YOUR THANG...Admirals winger Ryan Thang scored the only goal of the game for Milwaukee Friday night, his fourth tally of the season which is tops on the roster, continuing his hot touch from the end of last season. The Edina, MN native tied for the team lead with 13 points in the playoffs last year, and during the regular season he was the team's top scoring rookie with 41 points on 14 goals and 27 assists in 78 games.
IT'S MUELLER TIME...Chris Mueller is off to a quick start this year, having posted a six points (2g-4a) to lead the Admirals after the first five games. Mueller finished last year as the team's leading scorer with 50 points (24g-26a), in spite of missing 13 games on recall to Nashville. Undrafted out of Michigan State, Mueller was on an AHL contract until the middle of last season when the Predators signed him to a two-way deal and then recalled him to the NHL, where he registered three assists in 15 games in his first stint with the big club.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING...Last Friday night's game provided a number of firsts for the Admirals this season. In addition to it being the first loss of the season for Milwaukee, the Ads were outshot in the game 36-21, including 14-2 in the third period and overtime, marking the first time this year the team has been outshot. Also, when the Admirals trailed 1-0 after the first period it was the first time on the young season that they had been behind after any period of play.
ROSTER MOVES...The Admirals have assigned forward Chris Cahill and defenseman David Leaderer to the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. Cahill skated in four of the Admirals first five games and did not register a point. He played a pair of games for Milwaukee last season after finishing a four-year career at Yale University. Leaderer was recalled from Cincy last week and made the trip with the team to Abbotsford, but did not play in a game.
OVER THE AIR AND ON THE WEB...For the fifth consecutive season Sportsradio 1250 WSSP will serve as the Admirals flagship station with Aaron Sims calling all of the hard-hitting end-to-end action. In addition, the team has a one-hour hockey magazine dubbed "Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice" that airs every Monday from 6-7 pm on WSSP.
