Peoria Rivermen News Release
Brett Sterling scored twice, including the game winner, to lead the Peoria Rivermen to a 5-3 win over the Texas Stars on Thursday night at Carver Arena. The win marked the fourth straight game in which the Rivermen collected five goals as they improved to 3-3-1-1 on the season.
Brett Sonne gave the Rivermen a 1-0 lead at 11:07 of the first period. Ian Cole took a slap shot from the point that was initially stopped by Bachman with the left pad. The rebound went straight to Sonne who put the puck into an open net for his first of the year.
The Rivermen doubled their lead with Sterling's fourth goal of the year. Sterling obtained the puck at the right circle and fired a quick wrist shot over Bachman's left shoulder and into the net.
Peoria carried a power play into the second period which led to them taking a 3-0 lead. A scramble in front of the net resulted in both Cheechoo and Hensick getting shots on goal but it was Derek Nesbitt who squeaked one between Bachman's pads and into the net.
The Stars cut the lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal at 10:18 of the second period from Tomas Vincour. At 12:19, Jordie Benn scored his second of the season to get Texas within a goal on a screened shot from the blueline.
Texas tied the game as time expired in the second on a power-play tally from Matt Fraser. He was able to tap his seventh of the season on a feed from Raymond Sawada.
Sterling reclaimed the lead for the Rivermen at 13:15 of the third just seconds after coming out of the penalty box. Stefan Della Rovere carried the puck into the offensive zone and made a drop pass to Sterling. Sterling took a shot that went off the left post and into the back of the net. It was Sterling's team leading fifth goal of the season.
Anthony Nigro capped the scoring with an empty netter to give the Rivermen a 5-3 lead.
Ben Bishop finished with 31 saves to pick up his third win of the season while Richard Bachman finished with 28. Peoria went 1-for-5 on the man advantage for the evening while Texas went 2-for-6 on the power play.
The Rivermen host the Rockford IceHogs on Friday at 7 p.m. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Rivermen team calendar. Call 309-676-1040 or visit www.rivermen.net for tickets.
