Admirals Surrender Three in the Third, Fall to Checkers

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals (10-8-0-1) surrendered three unanswered third period goals as they fell to the Charlotte Checkers (11-6-1-1), 6-3, on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. Next up for the Admirals is a pair of games against the Providence Bruins on Friday and Saturday nights at Scope.

Mike Angelidis, Trevor Smith and Cory Conacher scored for the Admirals. Goaltender Jaroslav Janus fell to 5-3-1 on the season after stopping 20 shots.

The Admirals went ahead 16:06 into the first period on Angelidis' fourth goal of the season. J.T. Wyman collected the puck in the right corner and carried it behind the net. He emerged at the post near the right leg of Charlotte goaltender Justin Peters and sent a pass across the crease. Angelidis redirected the puck past Peters' left leg for a 1-0 Norfolk lead.

Charlotte briefly tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period on a power play. Chris Terry sent a shot from the right point that was deflected past Janus by Jerome Samson at 3:09.

Norfolk re-claimed the lead just 33 seconds later on Smith's ninth goal of the season. Smith collected a bouncing puck in the high slot and sent a wrist shot from the left circle that squeezed between the blocker and body of Peters at 3:47 for a 2-1 Admirals lead.

The Checkers once again quickly leveled the score - this time with a shorthanded tally by former Norfolk defenseman Mathieu Roy. Chris Terry led a two-on-one into the Admirals' zone along the right wing and sent a shot that bounced off Janus. Roy found the rebound in the slot near the right hashmarks and shoveled the puck past Janus at 5:29 to tie the game at 2-2.

Charlotte claimed their first lead of the game at 17:27 of the second stanza. Justin Kreuger sent a long pass to Riley Nash, who entered the attacking zone along the right wing. Nash sent a wrist shot from the right circle between the blocker arm and body of Janus to put the Checkers ahead, 3-2.

Norfolk tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period on Conacher's tenth goal of the season. Matt Fornataro sent a shot from the left corner that Peters stopped. Angelidis found the rebound in the goalmouth and dropped a pass between the hashmarks. Conacher one-timed the pass beyond the reach of Peters' blocker at 4:28.

However, the Checkers took the lead for good less than six minutes later on another power play goal. After a Norfolk shorthanded chance, Samson and Terry entered the Norfolk zone with a two-on-one chance. Terry passed from the slot to Samson in the right circle, and Samson's shot got past Janus' left leg at 10:04 for a 4-3 Charlotte lead.

The visitors doubled their lead just 41 seconds later on a turnover. Jon Matsumoto picked off a Norfolk outlet pass and skated in alone on Janus. He deked around Janus' right leg and slid a shot into the net at 10:45.

Zac Dalpe closed out scoring with a five-on-three power play goal at 17:39.

Jaroslav Janus (5-3-1) turned aside 20 of 26 shots in defeat. Justin Peters (5-2-1) stopped 34 of 37 shots for the win.

Norfolk was 0-1 on the power play. Charlotte was 3-6.

Next up for the Admirals is a pair of games against the Providence Bruins on Friday and Saturday nights at Scope. Friday night's game begins at 7:30 p.m. and is Diabetes Awareness Night to benefit the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center.
