Penguins Upended by Crunch, 7-5

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - A four-goal first period by the Syracuse Crunch doomed the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 7-5 loss on Wednesday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The defeat stretched the Penguins' winless streak to four games as they have gone 0-2-0-2 during that span.

The scoring started at 4:48 of the first period after a Jean-Francois Jacques check behind the Penguins' net freed the puck up for a quick pass that Kyle Palmieri sent over the shoulder of Scott Munroe. Rick Schofield made it 2-0 just more than a minute later, finishing a 2-on-1 break with John Mitchell.

Jacques got into the scoring act as well, beating Munroe from the bottom of the right circle at 10:48 of the first. Munroe would exit the game as Brad Thiessen came off the bench in relief.

Thiessen would be unable to stem the tide as Palmieri potted his second goal of the contest, a power play marker that Crunch forward toe-dragged beyond a poke check before ripping a shot into the corner for a 4-0 lead with 2:41 until the intermission.

Already leading by four to start the second period, the Crunch went up 5-0 on Matt Kennedy's goal before Alexandre Picard got the Penguins on the board 23 seconds later.

It only took 46 seconds for Nicolas Deschamps to help Syracuse reestablish its five-goal cushion, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would go on a tear to pull within two.

Brian Lerg redirected Jason William's slapshot over the pad of Iiro Tarrki at 14:52 and, 54 seconds later, it was Zach Sill muscling a wraparound shot inside the near post.

The Penguins would carry all the momentum into the break after Lerg notched his second of the night and pulled his team within a 6-4 score with 2:27 left in period.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was unable to capitalize on a man-advantage early in the third and Peter Holland would convert on a power play midway through the frame to put Syracuse ahead, 7-4.

Ryan Craig added a late goal with the extra attacker for the Penguins, who fired 54 shots in on Tarkki.
