Worcester Sharks News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Tommy Wingels tied the game in the third period for the Sharks but Manchester captain Marc-Andre Cliché scored a late power play goal to lift the Monarchs to a 2-1 victory over the Sharks at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday evening.
Tyson Sexsmith was solid in net for Worcester making 23 saves in the loss in a game that featured three fights and 62 penalty minutes.
Worcester Sharks tough guy Frazer McLaren (2nd FM) challenged Monarchs enforcer Justin Johnson (5th FM) at 7:15 after Johnson ran into Sharks goalie Tyson Sexsmith. McLaren landed several right hands before the two heavyweights were separated by the linesmen. Tyson Sexsmith made a series of terrific saves with four minutes remaining to keep the game scoreless. Matt Pelech (1st) dropped the mitts with Ray Kaunisto (2nd FM) at 16:55 after Pelech caught Jordan Nolan with his head down at the Sharks blue line. Pelech dropped Kaunisto in a one sided fight after Kaunisto stood up for his teammate. Worcester outshot Manchester 9-6 in a scoreless first period.
In the 2nd period, Taylor Doherty (1st FM) picked up his first professional fighting major after he tangled with Jordan Nolan (5th FM) behind the Worcester net at 4:15. The 6-foot-7 Doherty held his own against Nolan after Nolan checked him from behind. Ray Kaunisto (3rd) snapped a quick shot through the pads of Tyson Sexsmith at 8:06 from on top of the crease after Dwight King dug the puck out of the right wing corner in the Sharks zone. Worcester outshot Manchester 14-8 in the middle frame but trailed 1-0 after 40 minutes.
Marc-Andre Cliché (8th) scored a late power play tally at 18:32 of the third period to give Manchester a 2-1 lead. With Cam MacIntyre in the box for hooking, Cliché wristed a shot from 50 feet that was deflected of Taylor Doherty's stick on top of the crease and past Sexsmith for the game winner for Manchester.
The Sharks record falls to 6-5-2-2 with 16 points through 15 games and to 2-1-2-1 on the road.
