NORFOLK, VA - Bracken Kearns netted two power play goals to lead the Norfolk Admirals (26-41-2-5) past the Manchester Monarchs (34-30-5-4) 4-3 on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Admirals jumped out to the lead on the power play with their first shot of the game. Brandon Segal wrested control of the puck out of a scrum along the left wall and took it behind the net before passing to Vladimir Mihalik at the right point. Mihalik sent a wrist shot that was deflected into the net by Kearns at 2:42.

Norfolk doubled its lead just less than ten minutes later. Rob Klinkhammer sent a centering pass from behind the net to the slot and Chris Lawrence one-timed it past Manchester goaltender Jonathan Quick at 12:36.

It took just 41 seconds of play in the second stanza for the Admirals to go up 3-0. Newcomer Jamie Bates, playing in his first professional game, stole the puck from a Monarchs attacker in the neutral zone and sent a pass to Radek Smolenak. Smolenak cut across the left circle and sent a backhand shot into the cage for his 15th goal of the season.

Six minutes later, Kearns put Norfolk up 4-0 with his second power play goal of the game. David Schneider sent a shot from the right point that Kearns deflected into the meshing at the top of the net at 6:40.

Manchester clawed back with a pair of goals in the second half of the period. Teddy Purcell netted a power play goal with a slap shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Norfolk netminder Ryan Munce top-shelf at 10:18. Marc-Andre Cliche made it 4-2 when he found a loose puck in the slot and rifled it home at 18:09.

David Meckler drew Manchester within a goal of Norfolk with a man advantage tally at 14:40 of the final frame. However, Munce stopped 13 other third period shots to preserve the victory for the Admirals.

Ryan Munce (38 shots, 35 saves) earned the victory. Jonathan Quick (12 shots, 8 saves) picked up the loss through just over two periods of work. Curtis Darling stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief.

Norfolk was 2-9 on the power play. Manchester was 2-6.

The Admirals will travel to Philadelphia on Wednesday night before rounding out the 2007-08 home schedule with a pair of contests against the Albany River Rats on Friday and Saturday next week.
