Adirondack Phantoms News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Rookie right wing Ben Holmstrom scored his first career pro goal early in the first period, but the Adirondack Phantoms lost to the Norfolk Admirals 8-4 Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
Facing a crucial weekend for their post season hopes, the Phantoms wanted to jump out quickly against the team that holds the final guaranteed playoff spot in the East Division. A new face for Adirondack got things started as right wing Ben Holmstrom, playing in his second career AHL game out of UMass-Lowell, scored for the first time as a pro at 3:46 of the first period. Holmstrom tipped a Kevin Marshall slap shot passed goaltender Dustin Tokarski to give the Phantoms an early 1-0 lead. The Admirals tied the game on a power play goal from Ryan Craig at 8:45 and then took a 2-1 lead at 14:22 when Dana Tyrell, cut from the right corner to the middle and roofed a wrist shot off the corner post.
Captain Jared Ross pulled Adirondack level just 14 seconds into the second period, the fastest goal of the open a period this year by the Phantoms. Ross took a pass from Mika Pyorala and uncorked a fierce slap shot at the top of the left face off circle that sizzled over the glove of Tokarski and into the net for his tenth goal of the season. Adam Hall made it 3-2 Norfolk at 5:36 and Justin Keller scored at 8:57 for a 4-2 lead. Less than a minute later Andreas Nodl picked up a turnover in the high slot and blazed a shot over the glove of a screened Tokarski at 9:54, his tenth of the season, cutting the Admirals lead to 4-3. Unable to make a goalie change after Keller's goal, the Phantoms replaced starting goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak after Nodl's goal, replacing him with backup Kris Mayotte, making his Phantoms debut. The first shot he faced came almost four minutes later on a two-on-none breakaway where Chris Lawrence slid a pass across to Keller for a wide open tap-in and his second goal of the night at 13:29.
Carter Ashton scored at 2:36 of the third period to make it 6-3 Admirals, but the Phantoms responded. Denis Bodrov centered the puck to Rob Bellamy on a transition play and Bellamy made a beautiful touch pass back to his left to Jon Kalinski, who then fired the puck up under the crossbar at 5:27 to cut the lead to 6-4. 68 seconds later it was 7-4 Norfolk as Mitch Fadden scored on a shot from point blank range and Tyrell's second goal of the night, coming on a back-door play from a stellar pass from Scott Jackson at the point, made it 8-4 Admirals at 9:22.
Dustin Tokarski allowed four goals on 32 shots, but picked up the victory as Norfolk improved to 35-29-3-3. Starter Michael-Lee Teslak conceded four goals on 23 shots in the first 29:54 of action and took a no-decision. Backup Kris Mayotte was tagged with the loss in his Phantoms debut, stopping 11-of-15 shots over the final 30:06 of play as the Adirondack dropped to 30-33-3-3 and had their four-game point streak come to an end. The Admirals out-shot Adirondack 38-32 in the game and went 1-for-1 on the power play; the Phantoms were 0-for-1 with the man-advantage.
The Phantoms continue their three-game weekend trip with another 7:15 pm game against the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday, March 20th at Norfolk Scope Arena. Adirondack's next home game comes on Wednesday, March 24th as they host the Albany River Rats for a 7:00 pm face off at the Civic Center for Round Ten of the Time Warner Cable Cup Series.
